Job summary

Sustain Recruit in Melbourne is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to help shape an AI-first platform. You’ll stay hands-on while defining engineering standards, architecture and delivery practices for a growing team; contribute to automation, intelligent workflows and agent-based capabilities at scale.

The role focuses on building scalable APIs, cloud-native development in AWS, and partnering with teams to transform how insights are accessed and decisions are made.

Qualifications

• Proven Python and modern development framework expertise.
• Commercial experience with FastAPI, SQL and automated testing.
• Experience designing scalable APIs, complex systems and maintainable platforms.
• Cloud native development within AWS.
• Experience with AI assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude or Cursor.

Responsibilities

• Remain hands-on while helping define engineering standards, architecture and delivery practices for a growing team.
• Contribute to the development of an AI-first platform that combines automation, intelligent workflows and agent-based capabilities to solve business challenges at scale.
• Mentor engineers and drive quality through automated testing and scalable API design.
