Job summary

Commonwealth Bank is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead engineering platforms and developer tooling for engineers across the organization. The role focuses on modern CI/CD, automation, security tooling, and scalable software delivery at enterprise scale.

You will shape software platforms and tooling used by engineers, drive architectural decisions, and mentor teams to strengthen engineering standards while enabling safe, rapid code-to-production delivery.

Qualifications

• Significant hands-on software engineering experience with platforms and tooling.
• Experience building platforms and developer tooling used by engineers at scale.
• Strong knowledge of CI/CD and software delivery practices (GitHub, pipeline automation, tests, security tooling).
• Experience integrating tooling with cloud environments (AWS/Azure/GCP).
• Understanding of secure software delivery practices and compliance.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across software‑based platforms and developer tooling.
• Design, build and evolve scalable capabilities for development, integration and delivery.
• Contribute to CI/CD and engineering tooling across source control, automation, testing and artefact management.
• Build and evolve automated delivery capabilities to move code to production safely and efficiently.
• Collaborate across CommBank to develop enterprise-scale solutions using co‑building and inner-source approaches.
• Provide technical direction and lift engineering capability through mentoring and leadership.
