Job description

MMS is a mining company built to last. One our people are proud to work for, our clients trust, and our communities want around. We’re growing fast, and we’re doing it with a flat structure, which means the right people get real influence over real decisions, not just their patch of the business. As Principal Mining Engineer, you’ll be joining that growth at a level where your judgement genuinely shapes the company’s direction.

Role Overview

As the Principal Mining Engineer, you will be a cornerstone of the West Perth Technical Services team, driving technical excellence across our growing project pipeline. Reporting to the Head of Technical Services, you will lead project evaluations, drive scoping through to feasibility studies, oversee financial modelling, and ensure open‑pit designs meet the highest standards of safety, efficiency and commercial viability. Your expertise will be critical in navigating regulatory approvals, de‑risking operations, and optimising asset value across the full mining development cycle as MMS delivers end‑to‑end mining solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Study Management & Financial Modelling: Lead end‑to‑end scoping, Pre‑Feasibility (PFS), and Feasibility Studies (DFS). Take full ownership of financial and cost modelling, OPEX/CAPEX estimations, and technical reporting to support investment decisions.
  • Pit Optimisation, Designs & Scheduling: Deliver optimised open‑pit designs, ultimate pit limit evaluations, cut‑off grade strategies, and robust designs & production schedules that maximise resource recovery and operational efficiencies.
  • Regulatory & Approvals Management: Provide strategic technical oversight to navigate WA statutory approvals and regulatory frameworks, interfacing effectively with government departments.
  • Mentorship & Technical Leadership: Provide high‑level guidance, technical governance, and mentorship to the broader engineering team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the MMS Technical Services function.
  • Commercial & De‑Risking Strategy: Look beyond short‑term schedules to identify long‑term value‑add opportunities and evaluate project risks.
Requirements & Experience
Qualifications & Statutory
  • Tertiary Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering (or related technical discipline).
  • Professional Standing: Membership with AusIMM or equivalent professional body highly regarded.
  • Regulatory Expertise: Comprehensive understanding of the WA Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations and experience managing state environmental/mining approval processes.
Technical Experience
  • Industry Tenure: Significant experience (ideally 15‑20 years) in open‑pit mining operations and technical consulting, with a heavy focus on gold or base metal environments.
  • Software Proficiency: Advanced, expert‑level skills in industry‑standard software—specifically Deswik, Datamine & Alastri Suite.
  • Study Leadership & Valuation: Proven track record of delivering end‑to‑end technical studies with hands‑on capability in building, auditing, and maintaining financial/cash‑flow models.
Skills & Attributes
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to balance high‑level corporate strategy with the practical realities of site execution.
  • Communication: Exceptional report‑writing, presentation and stakeholder management skills—capable of translating complex technical data into clear executive summaries.
  • Collaborative Leadership: A natural mentor who thrives in a multi‑disciplinary technical environment and takes pride in developing peer engineering capability.
What We Offer
  • Perth‑Based Corporate Role: West Perth location with modern office space.
  • Direct Strategic Impact: Influence business growth and study outcomes alongside executive leadership.
  • Competitive Executive Remuneration: Highly attractive salary package tailored to principal‑level experience.
  • Collaborative & Agile Culture: Work in a dynamic environment with short decision‑making pathways and a strong, supportive technical bench.
