Job summary

Evoenergy seeks an experienced Principal Automation Standards Engineer to provide technical leadership, governance and technical assurance for automation, SCADA and control systems across our Canberra electricity network, including Greenway. The role is a senior specialist position focused on standards, consistency and long-term automation evolution.

Reporting to the Manager Engineering Standards, you will drive reference architectures, governance frameworks and compliance with cybersecurity

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • ACT Professional Engineering Registration or ability to obtain.
  • Extensive experience in electricity network automation, SCADA and control systems.
  • Strong knowledge of automation standards, SCADA integration and IEC 61850.
  • Experience in engineering standards, assurance or governance functions.
  • Experience reviewing automation systems against approved standards.
  • Understanding of risk management and change control in critical infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and continual improvement of automation engineering standards and reference architectures.
  • Act as Evoenergy's technical authority for automation standards and governance.
  • Maintain enterprise reference architectures, SCADA integration requirements and alarm principles.
  • Develop governance for configuration management, testing and change control.
  • Provide independent technical review and assurance of automation systems.
  • Deliver strategic advice on emerging automation and control technologies.
  • Collaborate with Asset Management, Network Delivery and external partners.
  • Ensure automation standards align with enterprise cybersecurity requirements.

Evoenergy is seeking an experienced Principal Automation Standards Engineer to provide technical leadership, engineering governance and technical assurance for automation, SCADA and control systems across our electricity network. This is a senior specialist role with a strong focus on setting standards, driving consistency and supporting the long‑term evolution of network automation capabilities.

Reporting to the Manager Engineering Standards, you will act as a key technical authority within the Engineering Standards function, helping ensure automation systems are safe, standardised, interoperable and aligned with Evoenergy's future network strategy.

About The Role

As Principal Automation Standards Engineer, you will lead the development and continual improvement of automation engineering standards, technical policies, system architectures and governance frameworks that support network automation, SCADA and control systems. You will work across the business to provide technical assurance, support engineering governance and ensure alignment between automation systems, operational requirements and cybersecurity obligations.

This role offers the opportunity to influence strategic technology decisions, support emerging capabilities such as digital substations and customer energy resources, and contribute to the future operation of the ACT's electricity network.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and continual improvement of automation engineering standards, technical policies, reference architectures and application guidelines.
  • Act as Evoenergy's technical authority for automation engineering standards, providing governance, technical stewardship and engineering assurance.
  • Establish and maintain enterprise reference architectures, control philosophies, SCADA integration requirements and alarm management principles
  • Develop governance frameworks for configuration management, technical reviews, standards compliance, testing and change control.
  • Provide independent technical review and assurance of automation systems, integration approaches and departures from approved standards.
  • Deliver strategic advice on emerging automation and control technologies, including digital substations, advanced control schemes and customer energy resource integration.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across Asset Management, Network Delivery, Works Enablement, Customer Delivery and external partners.
  • Ensure automation standards and engineering practices remain aligned with enterprise cybersecurity requirements.
About You

You are a highly experienced engineer with strong expertise in electricity network automation, SCADA and control systems. You enjoy working at a strategic level, providing technical leadership and developing standards that deliver consistent and reliable engineering outcomes.

Essential Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Current ACT Professional Engineering Registration, or the ability to obtain registration.
  • Extensive experience in electricity network automation, control systems and SCADA within transmission or distribution environments.
  • Strong knowledge of automation engineering standards, SCADA integration, control system architectures and IEC 61850.
  • Experience in engineering standards, technical assurance or engineering governance functions.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing and assuring automation systems against approved standards.
  • Strong understanding of risk management, change control and assurance practices within critical infrastructure organisations.
Desirable
  • Postgraduate qualifications in automation, power systems or a related discipline.
  • Experience developing automation standards, technical policies, reference designs or governance frameworks.
  • Experience supporting continuous improvement and standardisation initiatives.
Security Requirement
  • Successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain an AusCheck Clearance.
