Support Worker / Youth Support Worker

About the role

At BeLoved Home Care, our Support Workers and Youth Support Workers provide flexible, person-centred support across a range of services, including NDIS disability support, aged care, community support, and support for children and young people, including those in foster care and out-of-home care arrangements.

This is an all-round support role, and team members may work with different clients across different age groups depending on their skills, experience, availability and the needs of the people we support.

The role is not simply about completing tasks. It is about providing respectful, compassionate and practical support that helps people live their lives their way, maintain independence, feel safe and supported, build confidence and remain connected to their families, communities and everyday routines.

Key responsibilities

• Support NDIS participants, aged care clients, children and young people with everyday activities, community access, appointments, shopping, social outings, recreational activities, personal goals and companionship.

• Provide practical assistance to foster carers and families where required, including supporting children and young people with additional, developmental, behavioural or medical needs.

• Assist with transport to appointments, school, activities, family or kinship contact and other approved destinations.

• Support supervised family contact or visitation where required and complete appropriate documentation following the shift.

• Assist aged care clients to remain as independent and connected as possible within their own homes and communities.

• Support clients to live their lives through the assistance you provide — whether that means going shopping, attending appointments, having a coffee, seeing family, participating in the community, maintaining their home, developing life skills or simply having companionship and someone supportive alongside them.

• Promote independence rather than automatically taking over. Encourage clients and young people to participate, make choices and do what they can for themselves.

• Respect each person’s dignity, privacy, culture, preferences, routines and individual choices.

• Create a safe, calm and supportive environment, particularly when working with children, young people or clients who may be distressed, anxious or have complex support needs.

• Be reliable, punctual, engaged and fully present throughout every shift.

• Observe and report changes in a person’s wellbeing, behaviour, mobility, mood, environment or support needs.

• Follow care plans, behaviour support plans, medication requirements, clinical instructions, risk assessments, child safety requirements and organisational policies.

• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries while remaining warm, compassionate and genuinely interested in the people you support.

• Complete accurate, objective and meaningful progress notes, incident reports and other required documentation.

• Work collaboratively with clients, families, foster carers, support coordinators, child safety professionals, nurses, allied health professionals and the wider BeLoved Home Care team.

• Able to see the person before the disability, diagnosis, age, behaviour or support need.

• Able to speak with clients, not about them, and involve them in decisions wherever possible.

• Adaptable and able to change your communication and support approach depending on the individual you are working with.

• Able to build rapport with children and young people while maintaining clear and appropriate professional boundaries.

• Calm and emotionally mature, particularly when supporting people who may be distressed, dysregulated, anxious or experiencing challenging circumstances.

• Reliable, responsible and able to follow instructions, care plans and reporting requirements.

• Flexible with availability and willing to work a variety of shifts, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends and public holidays where required.

• Willing to work with a range of clients and accept a reasonable variety of shifts rather than only selecting preferred clients, locations, shift types or working hours.

• Understanding that support work is client-led and that hours may vary depending on individual, family and service needs.

• Proactive and willing to engage meaningfully with the person you are supporting rather than simply waiting to be directed throughout the shift.

• Able to work independently while communicating effectively with the broader BeLoved Home Care team.

• Willing to contribute positively to a team environment and support the needs of the service where reasonably required.

Mandatory requirements prior to commencement

Successful applicants must have, or be willing and able to obtain before commencing employment:

• A current NDIS Worker Screening Clearance.

• A current Working with Children Check / Blue Card.

• Current First Aid certification.

• Current Basic Life Support / CPR certification.

• A current and valid driver licence.

• Access to a reliable personal motor vehicle for work-related travel where required.

• Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for the vehicle used for work purposes.

These requirements are mandatory due to the nature of the work we provide across disability, aged care, community support and services involving children and young people.
