About the Role

An established, values-driven not-for-profit organisation is seeking a capable and motivated Payroll Officer to join its Payroll team on a permanent, full-time basis. Reporting to the Senior Payroll Officer, you’ll play an important role in delivering accurate, timely and compliant payroll services across the organisation. This is a hands‑on position offering the opportunity to build your technical capability across payroll systems, employee data, reporting and compliance, with formal training and ongoing support to help you develop into a trusted resource within the team. Working within a complex community services environment, you’ll manage a range of payroll transactions and employee updates while responding to enquiries, investigating discrepancies and supporting the integrity of payroll records and systems. The organisation is continuing to evolve its systems and processes, making this an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys learning, embraces change and takes a proactive approach to improving how work gets done. You’ll be supported to develop your knowledge, build confidence in the technical aspects of payroll and contribute to a team committed to delivering reliable, high-quality services.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Process payroll transactions accurately and within required timeframes, maintaining the integrity of employee payroll records.
  • Maintain employee records across payroll and rostering systems, including new employee setups, changes to employment details and employee departures.
  • Update payroll system information relating to pay rates, leave entitlements, taxation, superannuation and employee access.
  • Review timesheets and leave documentation to identify discrepancies and ensure information is complete and accurate.
  • Respond to payroll enquiries from employees, managers and external stakeholders, investigating issues and assisting with appropriate resolutions.
  • Assist with payroll reporting and compliance requirements, including PAYG, superannuation, end‑of‑month reporting and long service leave.
  • Support the monitoring and calculation of Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) matters and liaise with external providers regarding salary packaging and other employee payroll matters.
  • Interpret and apply relevant payroll legislation, industrial requirements and organisational policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to payroll system updates, process improvements and the implementation of new systems and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential and consistent records while managing competing priorities and payroll deadlines.
Skills, Experience and Qualities
  • Previous payroll experience, supported by a combination of practical experience and technical knowledge.
  • A foundational understanding of payroll legislation, compliance requirements and the importance of accurate and timely payroll processing.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to investigate discrepancies and respond to payroll‑related enquiries.
  • Proficiency in payroll and accounting software, with confidence using technology and learning new systems.
  • Advanced Excel skills and the ability to work with payroll data, reports and reconciliations.
  • A coachable and collaborative approach, with a genuine willingness to receive feedback, take direction and apply new knowledge.
  • A positive attitude towards change, including evolving processes, system implementations and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • A genuine alignment with the values of a community‑focused not-for‑profit organisation, with an appreciation of the complexities and responsibilities of the sector.
Benefits and Culture

This is an opportunity to build a long‑term career within an organisation whose work makes a meaningful difference to individuals, families and the wider community. Benefits include:

  • Receive hands‑on, one‑on‑one training and ongoing guidance to strengthen your payroll knowledge and technical capability.
  • Establish yourself within a dedicated Payroll team and develop into a reliable, knowledgeable resource for the organisation.
  • Contribute to the operational foundations of an organisation supporting people experiencing disadvantage and social exclusion.
  • Work alongside experienced colleagues who value shared knowledge, accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Broaden your exposure to payroll compliance, reporting, systems and process improvement in a complex organisational environment.
