Job summary

Queensland Health is seeking a laboratory assistant to perform general duties such as receiving specimens, registering requests in the laboratory information system, and processing samples across departments. You will adhere to patient identification and processing policies and maintain the lab environment.

The role requires strong data entry skills, teamwork, and the ability to follow instructions with minimal supervision while supporting quality, health, safety and compliance practices.

  • Experience following laboratory policies and accreditation requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Receive specimens and register requests into the laboratory information system.
  • Perform specimen processing tasks in the Central Specimen Reception and other departments as required.
  • Maintain the laboratory environment, including cleaning and restocking consumables.
  • Prioritise tasks to meet service delivery deadlines and respond to client inquiries with effective communication.
  • Adhere to QA, safety, and accreditation standards including NATA/ISO requirements.

Job description

What you'll doPerform general laboratory duties, including the receipt of specimens and registration of requests into the laboratory information system (basic keyboard/data entry skills).Perform specific laboratory duties in the Central Specimen Reception and other departments of the laboratory as required, including the processing of specimens relative to the department.Adherence to Pathology Queensland patient identification, labelling, collecting and processing policies at all times.Maintenance of the laboratory environment including cleaning and restocking of consumables.Ability to prioritise tasks in order to meet service delivery deadlines.Ability to respond to enquiries and instruction by clients by demonstrating effective communication skills.Actively seek the advice or approval of supervisory staff in relation to changes in work practices.Comply with National Association of Testing Authority/International Standardisation Organisation (NATA/ISO) accreditation/certification requirements including performing quality control procedures, assisting with preparation of procedure manuals and completion of relevant statistics.Comply with and utilise procedures, policies, regulations, and standards which impact upon the position including Queensland Health Code of Conduct, contemporary human resource management requirements and practices, such as workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination policy.About youWe are searching for someone with:Demonstrated experience in the interpretation of request forms, data entry and of the correct procedures for specimen processing.High level interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and work productively in a team environment.Proven ability to follow instructions and work conscientiously and accurately with minimal supervision after careful instruction.Demonstrated experience of the correct procedures for the performance of laboratory tests including processing and setting up techniques within the department.Ability to actively participate in a working environment supporting quality human resource management practices including employment equity, anti-discrimination, occupational health and safety and ethical behaviour.Why work with us?Work alongside passionate professionals in a supportive and inclusive environment that values people and prioritises employee success and wellbeing.
