Job description

Resources Safety and Health Queensland – Redbank QLD

Lead a skilled technical team and contribute to safer mining practices across Queensland.

Simtars is seeking an experienced Operations Supervisor to lead workshop staff across mechanical, electrical, fabrication, testing and research activities.

You’ll oversee technically complex projects from design and fabrication through to installation, testing and commissioning, ensuring high standards of safety, quality and regulatory compliance.

If you’re a strong leader with sound technical expertise and a passion for delivering practical solutions that improve safety in the mining and resources sector, we want to hear from you.

Join the Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station (Simtars) and play a key role in supporting innovative research, testing and technical solutions that help improve safety across Queensland’s mining and resources sector.

Based within the Mine Safety Technology Research Centre (MSTRC), the Workshop Supervisor provides hands‑on leadership to a skilled and diverse workshop team. You’ll combine your technical trade expertise with strong people leadership to deliver complex and often time‑critical projects from concept through to completion.

This is a varied role where no two projects are the same. You’ll work across equipment design, fabrication, modification, installation, testing, maintenance and research activities, collaborating with engineers, scientists and technical specialists to turn ideas and requirements into practical solutions.

The role also provides an opportunity to contribute to industrial response activities and emerging technologies, including 3D laser scanning, while supporting research and testing that has a direct impact on mine safety and health outcomes.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for an experienced and safety‑focused workshop leader who can:

  • Lead, motivate and develop a multidisciplinary workshop team.
  • Apply strong practical trade and technical knowledge to solve complex problems.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, standards and technical specifications.
  • Demonstrate experience across fabrication, welding, mechanical and/or electrical workshop environments.
  • Plan and prioritise competing projects while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality and delivery.
  • Communicate effectively with technical professionals, scientist, tradespeople, apprentices and external stakeholders.
  • Exercise sound judgement and initiative, particularly when responding to urgent or time‑critical work.

Experience in a research, testing, mining or heavy industrial environment will be highly regarded.

If you’re looking for a role where your technical skills, leadership capability and practical problem‑solving can make a genuine difference to safety in Queensland’s resources sector, we encourage you to apply.
