Job summary

Queensland Government is seeking a Workshop Supervisor within Simtars, part of the Mine Safety Technology Research Centre. You will lead a skilled workshop team, applying hands-on trade expertise to deliver complex projects from concept to completion.

You’ll work across fabrication, welding, mechanical and electrical activities, interpreting drawings and coordinating with engineers and researchers to translate requirements into practical, safe solutions for mine safety and health outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Trade qualification in a mechanical, welding or electrical discipline.
  • Experience leading a multidisciplinary workshop team.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a diverse workshop team to deliver projects on time.
  • Oversee fabrication, welding, mechanical and electrical work in a safe manner.
  • Plan priorities across multiple projects with emphasis on safety and quality.
  • Collaborate with engineers, scientists and external stakeholders on solutions.
  • Contribute to research, testing and industrial response activities as required.

Join the Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station (Simtars) and play a key role in supporting innovative research, testing and technical solutions that help improve safety across Queensland's mining and resources sector.Based within the Mine Safety Technology Research Centre (MSTRC), the Workshop Supervisor provides hands-on leadership to a skilled and diverse workshop team. You'll combine your technical trade expertise with strong people leadership to deliver complex and often time-critical projects from concept through to completion.This is a varied role where no two projects are the same. You'll work across equipment design, fabrication, modification, installation, testing, maintenance and research activities, collaborating with engineers, scientists and technical specialists to turn ideas and requirements into practical solutions.The role also provides an opportunity to contribute to industrial response activities and emerging technologies, including 3D laser scanning, while supporting research and testing that has a direct impact on mine safety and health outcomes.Who are we looking for?We are looking for an experienced and safety-focused workshop leader who can:Lead, motivate and develop a multidisciplinary workshop team.Apply strong practical trade and technical knowledge to solve complex problems.Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, standards and technical specifications.Demonstrate experience across fabrication, welding, mechanical and/or electrical workshop environments.Plan and prioritise competing projects while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality and delivery.Communicate effectively with technical professionals, scientist, tradespeople, apprentices and external stakeholders.Exercise sound judgement and initiative, particularly when responding to urgent or time-critical work.Experience in a research, testing, mining or heavy industrial environment will be highly regarded.If you're looking for a role where your technical skills, leadership capability and practical problem-solving can make a genuine difference to safety in Queensland's resources sector, we encourage you to apply.QualificationsIf your qualification is from an overseas institution, you are responsible for obtaining official recognition to determine comparability with the Australian Qualifications Framework.
