Melbourne Youth Orchestras
Help shape the future of music-making for young Victorians.
Melbourne Youth Orchestras (MYO) is seeking an accomplished conductor and inspiring educator to become our next Music Director, commencing in 2028 following Brett Kelly's planned departure.
Since 1967, MYO has brought young musicians together to learn, perform and achieve more than they imagined possible. We are looking for a musical leader with the artistic vision, collaborative spirit and commitment to young people to help guide our next chapter.
The role combines leadership of our flagship Melbourne Youth Orchestra with broader artistic and educational leadership across the organisation. Its current scope includes planning, rehearsing and delivering four flagship concert programs each year, alongside supporting or conducting special projects.
You will bring professional-level conducting experience, thorough musical preparation and the ability to achieve strong outcomes through well-planned, responsive rehearsals. Equally important are the empathy, patience and exceptional communication skills needed to support young musicians navigating demanding symphonic repertoire.
Our Strategic Plan 2026-2029 sets a direction for an organisation that is Diverse, Connected and Secure. Working with the CEO and our artistic and organisational teams, you will contribute ideas for ambitious programming, meaningful partnerships and opportunities that broaden participation and connect our musicians with audiences.
MYO welcomes applications from people of diverse backgrounds and experiences. We are committed to providing a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for all young musicians.
