Qualifications

Role Purpose

The Level 2 Systems Engineer is responsible for Level 2 technical support, systems administration and professional services delivery across Rhubarb’s managed customer environments.

The role has a particular focus on Modern Workplace, cloud and on-premise storage, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, collaboration, servers and migration work, while maintaining broad capability across endpoint, identity, network and SaaS technologies.

The engineer will own technical issues through resolution, participate in customer projects and progressively take responsibility for defined professional services engagements. The role works alongside senior technical staff and technical specialists on architecture, complex changes and higher-risk customer environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own Level 2 incidents, requests and technical escalations through to resolution.
  • Troubleshoot issues across Windows, macOS, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, identity platforms, storage, networking, endpoint management and SaaS platforms.
  • Investigate root cause and identify permanent remediation where appropriate.
  • Escalate effectively when specialist or senior technical input is required.
  • Identify when support requests require project, change or professional services engagement.
  • Maintain clear technical notes, customer communication and resolution documentation.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to first-line engineers.
Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace
  • Administer and support Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace customer environments.
  • Configure and troubleshoot SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and Google Drive.
  • Manage SharePoint sites, document libraries, permissions, sharing and access.
  • Support Exchange Online and Microsoft Teams, Google suite.
  • Administer users, groups, roles and access in various platforms.
  • Support Intune-managed endpoints and associated Microsoft cloud services.
  • Support the design and implementation of improved collaboration and file-management environments.
Storage & File Services
  • Administer and troubleshoot cloud and on-premise file services.
  • Support Windows file servers, NAS platforms and cloud storage environments.
  • Manage file shares, permissions, access and storage capacity.
  • Investigate data structure, permissions and dependencies ahead of migration or remediation work.
  • Assist with the design and implementation of appropriate file and storage structures.
  • Support backup, recovery and data-protection requirements relating to managed storage environments.
Servers & Infrastructure
  • Support Windows Server and Active Directory environments.
  • Administer users, groups, permissions and associated on-premise infrastructure services.
  • Troubleshoot DNS, DHCP and core network dependencies.
  • Support hybrid on-premise and cloud environments.
  • Assist with server upgrades, replacements, migrations and decommissioning.
  • Familiarity with supporting network and infrastructure platforms used with customer environments like Unifi and Meraki.
Telephony & Communications
  • Support Microsoft Teams Calling and other managed cloud telephony platforms.
  • Troubleshoot user, number, routing, device and configuration issues.
  • Assist with telephony deployments, migrations and configuration changes.
  • Support integration between telephony, identity and Microsoft 365 services.
  • Coordinate with carriers and third-party providers where required.
Migrations & Professional Services
  • Participate in and progressively own technical migration and implementation projects.
  • Deliver file server, NAS, SharePoint, OneDrive and cloud storage migrations.
  • Support Microsoft 365, Google workspace, tenant migration activities.
  • Assist with on-premise to cloud migration projects.
  • Perform technical discovery and create documentation of the source environments, dependencies, permissions and data requirements.
  • Prepare implementation, migration, testing and rollback procedures.
  • Execute approved technical changes within defined scope and standards.
  • Validate data, permissions, functionality and user access following migration.
  • Produce technical handover and ‘as-built’ documentation.
  • Communicate directly with customers throughout assigned technical work.
Endpoint & Identity
  • Support Windows and macOS endpoints.
  • Administer endpoint environments using Intune, Jamf Pro and associated management platforms.
  • Troubleshoot device enrolment, compliance, application and configuration issues.
  • Support Entra ID and cloud identity services.
  • Assist with user lifecycle, MFA, access and authentication issues.
  • Support customer onboarding and technology uplift activities.
Documentation & Technical Standards
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation for customer environments.
  • Produce implementation plans, migration records, configuration documentation and support procedures.
  • Follow established technical standards and change-management requirements.
  • Identify configuration drift, technical debt and recurring operational issues.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge, procedures and technical standards.
  • Ensure completed project work is appropriately handed into ongoing support.
Experience & Technical Capability
Required
  • Minimum 2–3 years’ hands-on IT support, systems administration or systems engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated Level 2 troubleshooting capability.
  • Practical administration experience with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.
  • Experience administering SharePoint Online and OneDrive.
  • Working knowledge of Windows Server and Active Directory.
  • Experience supporting file servers, NAS or business storage platforms.
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals including DNS, DHCP, LAN and Wi‑Fi.
  • Experience supporting WindowsOS and MacOS endpoints.
  • Experience with identity, permissions and user lifecycle management.
  • Experience participating in technical projects, migrations or infrastructure changes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot unfamiliar systems methodically.
  • Strong technical documentation and ticket‑management practices.
Highly Regarded
  • Previous MSP or multi‑customer IT experience.
  • Professional services or project delivery experience..
  • Microsoft Teams Calling or cloud telephony experience.
  • Hybrid Active Directory / Entra ID environments.
  • Windows Server migration or modernisation.
  • Synology or equivalent NAS/storage platforms.
  • Cisco Meraki or Ubiquiti.
  • Relevant Microsoft, Apple, Jamf or infrastructure certifications.
