Mechanical Engineer – HVAC / Building Services
Tier I Mechanical Contractor | Sydney-Based | NSW & ACT Projects
Salary: $100,000–$130,000 + Superannuation
The Opportunity
An opportunity is available for a Mechanical Engineer with 4+ years’ experience in building services design to join a leading Tier I mechanical contractor delivering a diverse portfolio of projects across NSW and the ACT.
Working closely with an experienced Design Manager, you will play a key role in the engineering and design delivery of mechanical services packages ranging from $1 million to $40 million in contract value. Projects will span the commercial, education and retail sectors, providing excellent exposure to a variety of building types, mechanical systems and project delivery methods.
The business also has a strong footprint across major data centre and healthcare projects, offering an excellent pathway to progress onto larger, technically challenging developments as your experience grows.
This is a great opportunity for an engineer looking to broaden their technical capabilities, gain greater exposure to the construction and delivery side of mechanical services, and develop their career within a major mechanical contractor.
Key Responsibilities
- Play a key role in the design and engineering of mechanical services packages across a diverse portfolio of commercial, education and retail projects.
- Develop practical HVAC design solutions, including system layouts, engineering calculations, equipment selection and technical documentation.
- Work closely with an experienced Design Manager, project teams and drafting personnel to deliver coordinated, buildable designs from concept through to construction.
- Identify opportunities for value engineering, improving system performance, constructability and overall project outcomes.
- Collaborate with clients, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors to resolve technical challenges and coordinate mechanical services with other building disciplines.
- Provide technical support throughout project delivery, including installation, commissioning and on-site design queries.
- Gradually expand your project exposure and technical responsibilities, with opportunities to progress onto major healthcare and hyperscale data centre developments.
About You
To be successful in this position, you will ideally possess:
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- At least 4 years’ experience in mechanical building services design.
- A sound understanding of Australian Standards, NCC requirements and relevant industry codes.
- Experience with HVAC design, including calculations, equipment selection, system layouts and technical documentation.
- Strong communication and coordination skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across engineering and project delivery teams.
- A practical mindset and an interest in developing your understanding of constructability, value engineering and mechanical services installation.
Experience within a mechanical contractor environment would be highly regarded, particularly for engineers who have been involved in design-and-construct projects.
However, consulting engineers looking to transition into the mechanical contracting sector are strongly encouraged to apply, provided they have solid building services design experience, knowledge of Australian Standards and a genuine interest in working more closely with construction and project delivery teams.
