Job summary

NEPEAN Longwall in Mackay is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design, analyse and support longwall mining equipment. You will contribute from concept to detailed design, manufacture, installation and in-field support for underground mining solutions, including longwall components and diesel vehicles.

Role involves collaboration with engineering, drafting, procurement, fabrication and customer-facing teams. A tertiary qualification in mechanical/mechatronic engineering and 5–10 years mining

Qualifications

• 5–10 years engineering experience in mining, heavy industrial or manufacturing environments.
• Experience with longwall or underground coal mining equipment.
• Strong 3D CAD design and analysis capability using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and Vault.
• Working knowledge of Australian Standards AS4100, AS3990 and AS3800.
• Willingness to undertake occasional site travel.

• Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and systems for longwall mining equipment.
• Perform engineering calculations including stress, fatigue and load analyses.
• Produce and review 3D models, assembly models and drawings using CAD tools.
• Prepare and review specifications, BOMs, technical reports and design verification records.
• Collaborate with engineering, drafting, procurement, fabrication and site teams to deliver project outcomes.
• Provide technical support during installation, commissioning and in-service operation.
• Support root-cause investigations, warranty matters and continuous improvement initiatives.

About the role

We are currently seeking a driven Mechanical Engineer to join our Mackay-based team. This is a hands-on engineering role where you will contribute to the design, analysis and support of longwall mining equipment and componentry, while working closely with engineering, drafting, procurement, fabrication and customer-facing teams.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager – QLD, you will be involved from concept through to detailed design, manufacture, installation and in-field support. The role also provides engineering support for development mining equipment and diesel vehicles distributed by NEPEAN in Australia, including technical evaluation, localisation and ongoing support for the Australian market.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and systems for longwall mining equipment, including AFCs, BSLs, drive units, chain and flight systems and structural steelwork.
• Complete engineering calculations and analysis, including stress, fatigue and load analysis, to ensure designs meet operational, safety and customer requirements.
• Produce and review 3D models, assembly models and detailed drawings using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and Vault.
• Prepare and review engineering documentation such as specifications, bills of materials, technical reports and design verification records.
• Collaborate with engineering, drafting, procurement, fabrication, quality, site service teams, customers and suppliers to deliver practical project outcomes.
• Provide technical support during equipment installation, commissioning and in-service operation.
• Support root-cause investigations, warranty matters and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Contribute to safe, reliable, cost-effective and manufacturable design solutions for underground coal mining operations.

About You:

• Tertiary Qualifications in Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering.
• 5-10 years previous engineering experience gained within mining, heavy industrial or manufacturing environments.
• Experience with longwall or underground coal mining equipment will be highly regarded.
• Previous exposure to Hydraulic or Diesel vehicles
• Strong 3D CAD design and analysis capability, ideally using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and Vault.
• Working knowledge of Australian Standards such as AS4100, AS3990 and AS3800, along with safety-in-design principles, will be advantageous.
• Strong analytical ability, practical problem-solving skills and sound engineering judgement.
• Confident communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, customers and suppliers.
• A collaborative approach and a genuine commitment to safety, quality and continuous improvement.
• Willingness to undertake occasional site, interstate or international travel as required.
