Job summary

Hirino Pty Ltd t/a Gundagai Meat Processors (GMP) is seeking a Maintenance Fabricator for a full-time position at the Gundagai site in NSW. The role involves interpreting drawings, fabricating and repairing plant equipment, and performing preventive maintenance in a meat processing environment.

The ideal candidate has welding skills (MIG/TIG/Stick), relevant engineering qualifications or strong fabrication experience, and a commitment to safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

• Certificate III in Engineering (Fabrication Trade) or Certificate IV in a relevant engineering discipline; or 3+ years fabrication/maintenance experience in lieu of formal quals.
• Experience with stick, MIG and TIG welding on metal components, including stainless steel.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
• Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills; able to work under time pressure.
• Good communication and teamwork; careful with safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Study and interpret engineering drawings to determine fabrication/repair requirements across GMP site.
• Prepare metal stock (stainless/mild steel) and cut to size using appropriate tools.
• Assemble and align fabricated parts, weld components, and finish to meet hygiene standards.
• Perform routine and preventive maintenance on conveyors, motors, and machinery.
• Respond to emergency breakdowns and conduct root-cause analysis to minimise downtime.
• Assist in installation/commissioning of new equipment and training of apprentices.

Full-Time Maintenance Fabricator Position/s: Maintenance Fabricator

Basis: Full Time Salary: $85000-95000 plus superannuation Location: Gundagai, NSW 2722 Company: Hirino Pty Ltd t/a Gundagai Meat Processors (GMP)

About Us GMP is a progressive meat processing business owned and operated by the Barton family in regional New South Wales, Australia. The plant is conveniently located halfway between Sydney and Melbourne on the Hume Highway in the beautiful foothills of the Snowy Mountains which is a prime lamb growing region. GMP has long been committed to the region and its people, innovation, and the meat processing industry. The business has recently completed an exciting expansion project to increase annual production capacity, export certification, and increased automation. With the plant’s increased capacity and the spring lamb flush, we are seeing sustainable increased numbers flow through the plant - now’s the time to join the team! We are seeking to nominate a Maintenance Fabricator position within our business with Maintenance Fabricator. All positions at GMP require adherence to quality assurance standards and workplace health and safety as first priority.

Key Responsibilities

• Study and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, sketches and specifications to determine the fabrication and repair requirements for plant equipment and structures across the GMP site.
• Select, measure, mark out and prepare metal stock, including stainless steel and mild steel plate, sections and pipe, ensuring materials are clean and suitable for use in a meat processing environment.
• Cut marked out metal sections and shapes to size using hand tools, grinders, plasma and oxy cutting equipment and metal cutting machines.
• Shape, bend and form metal sections, plate and pipe using hand and machine tools, and with the application of heat where required, to produce components for repairs and new equipment installations.
• Align, fit and assemble fabricated parts using hand tools and measuring instruments to ensure correct fit and tolerance before joining.
• Join metal components using stick, MIG and TIG welding processes, together with bolting and other mechanical fastening methods, to repair existing equipment and fabricate new equipment and structures.
• Inspect completed welds for bead width, penetration and accuracy, and finish fabricated work by grinding, filing, cleaning and polishing so that it meets structural integrity, quality and hygiene standards required in a meat processing plant.
• Perform routine and preventive maintenance on all mechanical plant, including but not limited to conveyors, chains, motors and production machinery.
• Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns, diagnose mechanical failures, conduct root cause analysis and implement effective repairs to minimise production downtime.
• Assist in the installation, assembly and commissioning of new equipment and machinery, ensuring that any modification to existing plant is approved by the Maintenance Manager and meets WHS requirements.
• Coordinate with maintenance team members, production managers and supervisors to optimise equipment performance and minimise disruption to production areas, and provide guidance and training to apprentice maintenance employees.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records, including equipment service history, work orders and parts inventory, and order, receive and manage the spare parts and consumables required for fabrication and repair work.
• Identify opportunities for process and equipment improvements and participate in continuous improvement initiatives and projects.
• Comply with all GMP Work Health and Safety, Quality and Good Manufacturing Practice policies and procedures, including completing permits for working at heights and confined space entry, reporting hazards and near misses, and participating in toolbox talks and training.
• Undertake shift work, including weekend work and rostered on call duties, and complete required jobs outside production hours as needed.

Qualifications / Skills Required

• Certificate III in Engineering (Fabrication Trade), Boilermaking or an equivalent metal trade qualification, together with at least two years of on the job training, OR a Certificate IV in a relevant engineering discipline. Applicants with at least three years of relevant fabrication and maintenance experience may be considered in place of formal qualifications.
• Demonstrated experience and confidence in stick, MIG and TIG welding, and in cutting, shaping and fabricating metal components, including stainless steel.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints and schematics.
• Sound mechanical fault finding and natural problem solving skills, with the ability to diagnose issues and complete repairs under time pressure.
• Ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines and work both independently and as part of a team.
• High level of communication skills and the ability to liaise with staff at all levels across the organisation.
• Strong organisational skills with an eye for accuracy and detail.
• A great attitude, proactive nature and a willingness to learn new skills and grow in the role.
• A commitment to working safely and in line with food safety and quality assurance requirements.
• Willingness to undertake shift work, weekend work and rostered on call duties.
• Preferred: previous experience in a similar maintenance fabrication role, ideally within a meat or food processing environment, and current working at heights and confined space tickets.
