Job summary

The University of Sydney invites applications for Magma Research Associate / Magma Research Fellow in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. The role develops and maintains the Magma computer algebra system, contributing to computational pure mathematics and software development.

Based at Camperdown Campus, you will design algorithms, engage with researchers across institutions, publish work, and explore AI-enhanced maths software.

Qualifications

• PhD in mathematics, computer science, or related discipline.
• Strong background in computational mathematics, computer algebra, or mathematical software.
• Experience in design, analysis, or implementation of algorithms.
• Experience with Magma or another computer algebra system is desirable.
• Proficient in C/C++ and Linux.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to travel and present research results.
• Experience with AI or machine-learning tools in mathematical research or software development.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement mathematical algorithms for Magma.
• Engage with users and researchers across institutions.
• Publish research papers on theory and algorithms.
• Explore AI-enabled approaches in mathematical software.
• Compile data sets and integrate into Magma.
