Job summary

The Y NSW invites applications for a Learn to Play Basketball Instructor to deliver engaging sessions for beginners, helping young players build confidence and foundational skills in a fun, safe environment.

  • Teach fundamental basketball skills including dribbling, passing, shooting, and basic game rules.
  • Adapt coaching methods to suit diverse needs.
  • Provide positive feedback to help participants grow.
  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of all participants.
  • Communicate with participants, parents, guardians, and team members.
  • Maintain attendance records and session notes.
  • Contribute to ongoing program improvement.

About the Role

As a Learn to Play Basketball Instructor, you will be responsible for delivering engaging and accessible basketball sessions to participants who are new to the sport. You will play a key role in building confidence, developing foundational skills, and fostering a love of the game in a supportive and encouraging setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver fun, structured, and age-appropriate basketball sessions for beginners
  • Create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all participants regardless of skill level, background, or ability
  • Teach fundamental basketball skills including dribbling, passing, shooting, and basic game rules
  • Adapt coaching methods and activities to suit the diverse needs of participants
  • Provide positive, constructive, and encouraging feedback to help participants grow and build confidence
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all participants throughout every session
  • Communicate effectively with participants, parents, guardians, and other team members
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and session notes as required
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of the program by sharing ideas and feedback
What We Are Looking For
  • A genuine passion for basketball and sharing that passion with others
  • Experience in coaching, teaching, or instructing in a sporting or community setting (formal or informal)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds
  • A patient, encouraging, and positive approach to working with beginners
  • The ability to adapt your coaching style to meet the needs of diverse groups
  • A current Working with Children Check or willingness to obtain one
  • First Aid & CPR certification or willingness to obtain one
