Job summary

Lockheed Martin Australia is seeking a Lead Systems Engineer to help shape Australia’s sovereign air and missile defence capability within the AIR6500 program. You will lead systems engineering across large, complex subsystems in an Agile, MBSE-driven environment, collaborating with customers, SMEs and industry partners to mature interfaces and architectures.

The role involves hands-on subsystem design and reviews, with opportunities to influence design maturity and deliver integrated outcomes

Qualifications

• Extensive Systems Engineering experience on large, complex systems with strong requirements analysis and design.
• Ability to assess technical options, perform design trade-offs and evaluate impacts.
• Experience with DOORS or DOORS Next Generation.
• Experience in Agile environments and MBSE principles.
• Defence domain experience (C4ISREW, Command & Control, communications, ISR, Electronic Warfare or similar).
• Proficient in AI prompting for this position.

Responsibilities

• Lead system and subsystem requirements analysis, decomposition and design within a Model-Based Engineering environment.
• Drive early-stage systems engineering activities including solution development, design trade-offs and requirements refinement.
• Lead the development of subsystem architectures, specifications, design descriptions, trade studies, test procedures and other technical artefacts.
• Conduct technical workshops with customers, SMEs and engineering teams to mature requirements, interfaces and system designs.
• Collaborate across Systems Engineering, Verification & Validation, Support Systems and Specialty Engineering disciplines to deliver integrated outcomes.
• Lead subsystem engineering reviews and establish measures to assess design and requirements maturity throughout the development lifecycle.

Join the AIR6500 program as a Lead Systems Engineer and help shape the future of Australia’s sovereign air and missile defence capability.

AIR6500 is delivering the Joint Air Battle Management System (JABMS) for the Royal Australian Air Force, bringing together air, electromagnetic and missile defence capabilities within a complex, multi-domain environment. As the program continues to evolve, you’ll have the opportunity to tackle challenging early-stage systems engineering problems where your experience and technical judgement can make a genuine impact.

This is a varied, hands‑on role. One day you may be designing and defining a complex subsystem, and the next you could be working with customers and technical specialists to shape new approaches for future Air Force capability. You’ll work in an Agile environment alongside experienced engineers, SMEs and industry partners, with the opportunity to directly influence the design and maturity of a nationally significant Defence system.

Lead Systems Engineer’s

What you’ll bring

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Extensive Systems Engineering experience on large, complex systems, with strong capability in requirements analysis, decomposition and system design
• Proven ability to assess technical options, conduct design trade-offs and understand impacts across component, subsystem and system levels
• Experience with requirements management tools such as DOORS, DOORS Next Generation (DNG) or similar
• Experience working in Agile engineering environments, with the maturity and adaptability to deliver in an evolving program
• Knowledge of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles, with practical modelling experience highly regarded
• Defence domain experience, ideally within C4ISREW, Command & Control, communications, ISR, Electronic Warfare or other complex Defence capabilities
• Proficient in AI prompting as it applies to this position and practice
