Job summary

Canon Australia’s Oceania Research team seeks a Senior Research Engineer to shape global standards in video compression and machine learning. You’ll conduct advanced research, generate IP, and represent Canon in international standards bodies.

Based in Macquarie Park, Sydney, you’ll collaborate with researchers worldwide, explore emerging technologies, and contribute to industry-leading initiatives that reach audiences around the world.

Qualifications

• Expertise in video compression standards (HEVC, VVC) and ML, esp. computer vision.
• Strong Python and C++ programming skills in Linux environments.
• Excellent technical communication for specialist audiences.
• Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
• Experience in standards organisations or IP activities is highly regarded.
• Understanding of hardware and software implementation considerations is advantageous.
• PhD in a relevant discipline is highly regarded.
• Willingness to travel internationally to participate in standards meetings.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research into video compression, computer vision and machine learning technologies.
• Investigating technologies undergoing standardisation within international standards-setting organisations.
• Designing and executing experiments to evaluate and improve emerging standards.
• Generating innovative concepts and contributing to patent and intellectual property development.
• Preparing and presenting technical contributions to international standards bodies and working groups.
• Collaborating with global research teams, stakeholders and intellectual property specialists.
• Supporting the adoption of new technologies into international standards.
