Job summary

Alliance Automation in Adelaide, South Australia, is seeking a Lead Control Systems Engineer to drive complex automation projects from concept through commissioning. You will mentor engineers, lead technical teams, and build trusted client relationships while delivering high-quality outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years' demonstrable experience in industrial automation and electrical engineering.
  • Experience delivering complex automation projects from concept to commissioning.
  • Strong knowledge of PLC, SCADA, HMI, DCS, and industrial communications.
  • Ability to lead technical teams and mentor developing engineers.
  • Experience managing client relationships and acting as a trusted technical advisor.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, testing, implementation, and commissioning of automation solutions.
  • Act as the technical lead on projects, guiding engineers and teams.
  • Engage with clients to understand requirements and build long-term relationships.
  • Develop control architectures, functional specs, and documentation.
  • Oversee project delivery including scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety.
  • Provide leadership across PLC, SCADA, HMI, DCS, and industrial networks.
  • Support proposals, estimations, and technical input for new business.
  • Identify risks and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for high-quality outcomes.
  • Champion safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a Lead Control Systems Engineer to play a key role in delivering complex automation and control systems projects across South Australia’s industrial, infrastructure, energy, water, mining, and manufacturing sectors.

This is an opportunity to lead projects from concept through to commissioning, build trusted client relationships, mentor developing engineers, and influence technical outcomes across the business. You’ll be supported by a strong team culture that values collaboration, innovation, safety, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, development, testing, implementation, and commissioning of industrial automation and control system solutions.
  • Act as the technical lead on projects, providing direction, guidance, and mentoring to engineers and project teams.
  • Engage with clients to understand operational requirements, develop solutions, and build long-term relationships.
  • Develop control system architectures, functional specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Oversee project delivery to ensure scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety objectives are achieved.
  • Provide technical leadership across PLC, SCADA, HMI, DCS, and industrial network environments.
  • Support proposal development, estimating, and technical input for new business opportunities.
  • Identify project risks and implement practical mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality engineering outcomes.

Experience & Skills
  • Minimum 7 years' demonstrable experience in industrial automation, control systems, and electrical engineering environments.
  • Proven experience delivering complex automation and control systems projects from concept through to commissioning.
  • Strong knowledge of PLC, SCADA, HMI, DCS, and industrial communications technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams and mentor developing engineers.
  • Experience managing client relationships and acting as a trusted technical advisor.
  • Strong project delivery capability, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and risk management.
  • Ability to develop control philosophies, functional design specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Experience working within mining, energy, water, utilities, manufacturing, infrastructure, or heavy industrial sectors.
  • Strong commercial awareness and an understanding of project delivery in consulting or contracting environments.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capability.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and engineering excellence.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Eligible for membership with Engineers Australia (desirable).
  • Current Australian driver's licence.
  • Ability to travel to client sites as required.
