Job summary

Qualifications

• Compulsory safety inductions and a current Queensland driver licence are required.

• ACDC ticket and traffic control qualification are highly desirable.
• Experience with rural road and town maintenance is essential.
• Ability to lead a small team and communicate clearly with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Carry out general labouring duties including roadside spraying and pothole repairs.
• Operate and maintain small plant such as mowers and trimmers.
• Read and interpret plans and instructions for works.
• Undertake traffic control and implement traffic plans as required.
• Report weeds and assist in disaster response and recovery when needed.
• Participate in toolbox talks and promote Council image and public relations.
• Liaise with clients, staff, public and authorities to provide information.
• Undertake administrative tasks like timesheets and issue work orders.

The Opportunity

Assist with the day-to-day operations of Council’s Infrastructure Services Department in accordance with Council Policies, the requirements of the community and industry standards.

Banana Shire is situated in Central Queensland, Australia located 120 km west of the growing industrial city and port of Gladstone - and an easy drive to the city of Rockhampton.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Carry out general labouring duties such as roadside spraying, guidepost installation, tree limb removal, pothole repairs etc
• Operate and maintain small items of plant such as mowers, whipper snippers, hedge trimmers etc
• Read and interpret basic plans and instructions
• Undertake all aspects of roadside spraying activities • Undertake traffic control and implement traffic plans as required
• Report identified weeds
• Participate in toolbox and team meetings
• Contribute to the promotion of the image of the Council and the maximisation of good public relations
• Liaise with clients, other Council staff, the public, consultants, utility and government authorities in the performance of duties including providing and obtaining information
• Undertake routine administrative tasks as required by the position e.g. timesheets
• Assist senior staff to continuously improve work processes and develop new practices as required
• Participate in training, exercises and response to disaster management and recovery as required
• Undertake other relevant duties as directed, consistent with skills, competence and training.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND LICENCE REQUIREMENTS

Compulsory

• QLD General Safety Induction (white or blue card)
• Queensland ‘C’ class driver’s licence (minimum requirement – provisional licence)
• Level 2 chainsaw operations
• Agricultural Chemical Distribution Control Ticket (ACDC)
• Pole saw operations.

Desirable

• Traffic Control Qualification
• Plant qualifications such as truck, bobcat, roller etc.

ABILITIES, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

Compulsory

• Demonstrated experience in civil infrastructure maintenance projects including the ability to operate and maintain relevant plant and equipment
• Demonstrated experience in road and town maintenance techniques and the effective operation of road making plant within a construction/maintenance infrastructure environment, together with the ability to provide basic repair and daily maintenance for road plant
• Ability to exercise initiative and to lead and motivate a team to maximise performance, together with sound level of oral and written communication skills
• Good understanding of and commitment to EEO and WHS principles and practices.
