Mercure Townsville is seeking a Kitchen Hand to support daily kitchen operations, working alongside Chefs and the Food & Beverage team in a busy hotel setting.

You will help maintain cleanliness, assist with basic food preparation, handle deliveries, and follow food safety and hygiene procedures. This full-time role offers stable hours with growth opportunities and perks such as parking and staff discounts.

Qualifications

• Previous kitchen experience encouraged but not required.
• Understanding of food safety and hygiene practices.
• Food Safety Certificate is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Wash dishes and clean kitchen equipment using commercial dishwashing gear.
• Maintain cleanliness of kitchen areas including floors, benches, storage, and cold rooms.
• Assist with basic food preparation as directed by the kitchen team.
• Receive and store deliveries following food safety requirements.
• Dispose of waste and replenish cleaning supplies.
• Assist with end-of-shift and deep cleaning duties.
• Follow all food safety, hygiene, sanitation and workplace safety procedures.
• Report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
• Collaborate with chefs, cooks and front-of-house to support service operations.

About the role

As our Kitchen Hand, you will play an essential role in supporting the day-to-day operations of our kitchen. Working closely with our Chefs and Food & Beverage team, you will help maintain a clean, safe, and efficient kitchen environment while assisting with food preparation and ensuring the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness are upheld.

Key responsibilities

• Wash dishes, pots, pans, utensils, and kitchen equipment using commercial dishwashing equipment.
• Maintain the cleanliness of kitchen work areas, including floors, benches, storage areas, cool rooms, and equipment.
• Assist with basic food preparation as directed by the kitchen team.
• Receive and store deliveries in accordance with food safety requirements.
• Dispose of waste and recycling appropriately.
• Replenish cleaning supplies and kitchen consumables as required.
• Assist with end-of-shift and deep cleaning duties.
• Follow all food safety, hygiene, sanitation, and workplace health and safety procedures.
• Report any maintenance, cleanliness, equipment, or safety concerns promptly.
• Work collaboratively with chefs, cooks, and front-of-house team members to support smooth service operations.

About you

• Previous experience in a commercial kitchen, hotel, hospitality venue, café, or restaurant is preferred but not essential.
• Understanding of food safety and hygiene practices.
• Food Safety Certificate (desirable).
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.
• Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Physically fit and able to stand for extended periods and perform manual handling tasks.
• Flexibility to work a rotating roster, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
