ACM in Launceston, Tasmania seeks a journalist to cover local events, break news, and produce engaging content for print and digital audiences across the region. You will work closely with the Editor and editorial team, balancing independence with collaboration and room to grow your skills and career.

This hands-on role emphasizes digital storytelling, local insights and strong deadlines, with opportunities to develop reporting, photography and multimedia skills while contributing to trusted

Qualifications

• Deadline-driven, able to deliver accurate daily content for print and digital platforms
• Solid digital storytelling skills including basic photography/video
• Experience in a regional newsroom is desirable

Responsabilités

• Interview, research, and write accurate, engaging news content for print and digital platforms
• Develop contacts and build trust within the local community
• Attend local events, council meetings, court proceedings and sports fixtures for regional coverage
• Pitch fresh story ideas at editorial conferences and manage a personal contact diary
• Produce stills, video and audio to accompany stories and enhance digital galleries
• Ensure content is ethical, accurate and compliant with legal standards and deadlines
• Collaborate with newsroom colleagues and engage with the community across channels

About the Role

You’ll be working closely with the Editor and editorial team at The Examiner in Launceston, Tasmania to cover local events, break news, and generate engaging content for print and digital audiences across the region. This role plays an essential part in strengthening our community connection, driving digital subscription growth, and giving local residents a stronger voice. This is a hands‑on role that offers both independence and collaboration, with space to grow your skills and career.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Interview, research, and write accurate, engaging news content across print and digital platforms, maintaining an agreed daily output.
• Develop contacts, rapport and trust across an assigned community within our region.
• Attend local events, council meetings, court proceedings, and sporting fixtures to ensure comprehensive regional coverage.
• Pitch fresh, relevant story ideas at daily morning editorial conferences and maintain an active personal contact diary.
• Produce still photographs, video, and audio elements to accompany stories and enhance digital galleries.
• Ensure all content is ethically sound, accurate, and compliant with legal/defamation standards while adhering to daily deadlines.
• Collaborate with newsroom colleagues and engage with the community across digital and social channels.

What You’ll Bring

• Deadline & Production Discipline (Essential): Ability to prioritise work, meet strict daily print and digital deadlines, and adapt to flexible or irregular news hours.
• Digital & Multimedia Capability (Essential): Genuine interest in digital media, adaptability to newsroom software/CMS tools, and basic skills in taking news photography or video.
• Qualifications & Regional Experience (Desirable): Tertiary qualifications in journalism, media, or communications, and prior experience in a regional newsroom environment.
