Job summary

Peoplebank is recruiting an IBM Mainframe Developer (COBOL/PL/I) for a long-term contract based in Canberra with a 5-day onsite arrangement. Remote work may be considered with approval.

The role requires active NV1 clearance and involves delivering across the full SDLC, debugging and supporting COBOL/PL/I, CICS, JCL, VSAM, DB2 on mainframes. You will collaborate with project teams, maintain documentation, and participate in after-hours support as required.

Qualifications

• Strong experience with COBOL and PL/I, CICS, JCL, VSAM, DB2 on IBM mainframes.
• Experience with mainframe debugging and telemetry/monitoring tools.
• Strong knowledge of mainframe operating systems, including z/OS and/or z/VSE.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues.
• Active NV1 security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and support IBM mainframe applications across the full SDLC.
• Write well-designed, testable and efficient code to meet milestones.
• Work with COBOL, PL/I, CICS, JCL, VSAM, DB2 and other mainframe tech.
• Produce technical specifications and assess feasibility of solutions.
• Integrate components into fully functional systems.
• Perform unit and component testing and support QA activities.
• Investigate, troubleshoot and resolve technical issues including production incidents.
• Support code deployment and release activities per change processes.
• Collaborate with project managers, analysts, developers and users to deliver quality solutions.
• Maintain technical documentation and walkthroughs.
• Take ownership of issues and drive queries to resolution.
• Contribute to forward planning to meet future requirements.
• Liaise with third-party suppliers as required.
• Provide technical advice and guidance to colleagues and management.
• Identify opportunities to improve development and support processes.
• Participate in rotating after-hours support roster.
