Job summary

Westpac Technology is seeking a Principal Engineer to drive technical leverage across Shared Data and AI, Digital, or Contact Centre squads. You will lead the most complex problems, establish reusable patterns, and empower teams to deliver with autonomy.

You will combine deep domain expertise with systems thinking, guide design decisions, prototype risky ideas, and ensure production readiness. This hybrid role offers opportunities across multiple teams with location and arrangements confirmed

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience solving complex engineering problems spanning multiple services or squads.
• Deep expertise in at least one engineering domain with broad systems knowledge.
• Strong design judgement for APIs, events and asynchronous workflows.
• Ability to blend strategic design with practical validation including coding or prototyping.
• Experience with Git, CI/CD, automated testing, containers, cloud, IaC, observability and secure dependencies.
• Security, privacy and risk mindset aligned with enterprise guardrails.

Responsibilities

• Clarify complex problems and guide key design decisions.
• Prototype high-risk elements to validate feasibility and security.
• Create reusable patterns and boundaries to enable squad autonomy.
• Collaborate with engineers, product, data, architecture, cyber and risk teams.
• Support production readiness with improved observability and reliability.
