Job summary

Westpac is seeking a senior Data Scientist who works at the nexus of AI, data engineering, and macroeconomics. You will build production-grade data science solutions, deploy econometric and ML models, and translate complex economic hypotheses into scalable insights for institutional clients and internal research teams.

You’ll collaborate across DataX, Economics, and DDAI to leverage modern tooling and cloud ML platforms (Azure/SageMaker) while engaging with researchers and strategists to deliver

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science.
• Proven experience delivering production-grade data science / ML solutions.
• Strong background in statistical modelling and time-series analysis.
• Deep capability in Python (scikit-learn, statsmodels, PyTorch/TensorFlow).
• Deep track record building scalable models and data-driven products.
• Ability to operate in complex enterprise environments with stakeholder engagement.
• Economics, econometrics, or financial markets exposure.
• Experience building NLP / LLM-driven solutions with Cloud ML platforms (Azure ML, SageMaker).
• Experience working with researchers, strategists, or domain experts.
• Curious, commercial, and delivery-focused with clarity and influence.

Responsibilities

• Build and deploy econometric + ML models for forecasting, nowcasting, and scenario analysis.
• Develop AI-enabled tools (NLP, automation) to productionize research workflows.
• Translate economic hypotheses into quantitative frameworks.
• Work hands-on with macro, transaction, and alternative datasets to unlock insights at scale.
• Drive end-to-end model lifecycle from experimentation to production and governance.
• Present insights to technical and executive audiences.
