Job summary

Cairns Regional Council seeks a Head of Lighting & Systems Technician to lead lighting and systems across CPAC, MMP and other venues. You’ll design and deliver lighting for client runs, manage resources and timelines, and supervise casual staff to ensure top standards.

You’ll bring extensive live production experience, with strong leadership, WHS knowledge and a collaborative approach to support performances and events in a dynamic cultural setting.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years’ experience in a multi-stage arts centre, production company or theatre environment.
  • Operational competency across audio, AV, rigging and general technical production.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills with WHS obligations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all lighting and systems operations across CPAC, MMP and other venues.
  • Design, interpret and deliver lighting requirements for clients while managing resources and timelines.
  • Operate and maintain lighting, audio, AV, staging and rigging systems to a high standard.
  • Develop standard lighting rigs and comprehensive technical documentation.
  • Oversee maintenance schedules for lighting and rigging equipment.
  • Supervise casual technicians during bump-in/out, performances and events.
  • Coordinate with clients and hirers to ensure safe, high-quality delivery.

Head of Lighting & Systems Technician

Requisition Number: 1304

Salary Range: $83,094.14 - $88,784.00 per annum

Position Type: Full-Time Permanent

Location: Cairns Performing Arts Centre

Application Close Date: Monday, 21st September 2026 at 11.30pm AEST

Play a key role in bringing performances, events and productions to life through expert technical delivery, innovative lighting design and exceptional venue support.

What we’re looking for
  • At least five years’ experience in a multi‑stage arts centre, production company or theatre environment.
  • Operational competency across audio, audio‑visual, rigging and general technical production.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills, with a strong understanding of WHS obligations.
  • Experience with ETC EOS, MA grand or Hog lighting systems, as well as CAD/Vectorworks and lighting visualisation tools.
  • Rigging certification, LR Class Driver Licence, First Aid/CPR, White Card, EWP (>11m) and Test & Tag certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Certificate III in Live Production Services and Certificate IV in Lice Production & Technical Services (or ability to obtain)
  • Strong customer service skills, a positive and team‑focused attitude, and the ability to work under pressure.
What you’ll be doing
  • Lead all lighting and systems operations across CPAC, MMP and other Cultural Services venues.
  • Design, interpret and deliver lighting requirements for clients while managing resources and timelines effectively.
  • Operate and maintain lighting, audio, AV, staging and rigging systems to a high professional standard.
  • Develop standard lighting rigs and comprehensive technical documentation.
  • Oversee and deliver maintenance schedules for lighting, systems, staging, fly and rigging equipment.
  • Supervise casual technicians during bump‑in/out, performances, events and maintenance periods.
  • Work directly with clients, hirers, tour managers and performers to ensure seamless, safe and high‑quality event delivery.
  • Maintain backstage areas, support inductions, advise on set electrics, and act as Fire/Chief Warden when required.
