Job summary

Birkenhead Tavern, part of the Duxton Group, is seeking an experienced Head Chef to lead the kitchen team. You will drive day-to-day operations, balance pub favourites with seasonal dishes, and foster a high-performing, supportive kitchen culture.

You’ll craft menus, manage costs, ensure food safety, and mentor staff, delivering consistent quality and a standout guest experience in a busy pub setting.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Head Chef or senior kitchen leader.
• Passion for quality pub food and consistent execution.
• Strong leadership with a practical, hands-on approach.
• Confidence managing food costs, stock, and kitchen operations.
• Excellent food safety and hygiene knowledge.
• Ability to stay calm, organized and communicate during busy services.
• Commitment to creating a positive, respectful team culture.

Responsibilities

• Develop menus that appeal to guests, blending pub favourites with seasonal ideas.
• Lead organised, efficient kitchen operations through preparation and service.
• Train, support and motivate the kitchen team.
• Maintain consistent food quality, presentation and portion control.
• Manage food costs, ordering, stock control and wastage.
• Collaborate with venue management and front-of-house to deliver a great guest experience.
• Maintain food safety, hygiene and kitchen cleanliness standards.
• Bring fresh ideas to improve the menu, kitchen processes and team performance.
