Job summary

SMEC Australia seeks a Civil Engineering graduate to join the two-year Graduate Development Program (GDP). You will contribute to design, analysis and documentation on major infrastructure projects, gaining hands-on experience from day one.

You will be mentored by senior engineers, participate in structured training and site visits, and develop consulting and collaboration skills across teams within the SJ Group. On completion, you progress toward professional titles and broader opportunities.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Experience with AutoCAD or Civil 3D; 12D advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Support delivery of real infrastructure projects, contributing to design, analysis and documentation.
• Assist with engineering calculations and analyses across roads, drainage or structures.
• Participate in site visits and inspections to understand field implementation of designs.

Graduate Engineer – Civil Engineering (Feb 2027 Program)- Newcastle & Canberra

The Role

As a Graduate at SMEC, you’ll be part of a high-impact talent group, contributing to the delivery of major infrastructure projects alongside experienced engineers and technical specialists.

Our two-year Graduate Development Program (GDP) is designed to accelerate your growth – combining hands‑on project experience with structured learning, mentoring, and exposure across teams and disciplines.

Once completed, successful Graduates move along our Career Pathways, transitioning to their Professional title (either ‘Graduate’ or ‘Scientist’ depending on the technical discipline) and then onwards. Growth is a balanced blend of experience, tenure, development, goals and desired trajectory.

Key Responsibilities

You’ll support the delivery of real infrastructure projects from day one — contributing to design, analysis and documentation while learning from experienced engineers and gaining exposure to site and project delivery.

• Contribute to the delivery of real projects by supporting design development, including drawings, models and technical documentation
• Assist with engineering calculations and analysis across areas such as roads, drainage or structures under guidance from senior engineers
• Participate in site visits and inspections to develop an understanding of how designs are implemented on live projectsCollaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate design inputs and support project delivery milestones
• Learn and apply industry standards, tools and best practice through structured development and on‑the‑job experience

About You

You’re a motivated Civil Engineering graduate who enjoys problem‑solving, working in teams, and contributing to real‑world projects.

You Will Bring
