Job summary

City of Gold Coast is offering a 12-month Graduate Academy to kickstart your career in data science. You’ll join the Performance and Analytics team and build real-world data insights for environmental, resilience and infrastructure projects.

Starting February 2027, successful candidates will work on diverse datasets, apply R/Python, ML techniques, and data visualisation tools to drive informed decisions and business improvements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or higher in Data Science, CS, Math or related fields.
• Graduates must have completed degree within the last two years or before Feb 2027.
• Applicants must have full working rights in Australia for the program duration.
• Strong analytical mindset with data-driven decision making.

• Salary: From $86,611 per annum plus superannuation

Starting February 2027, the Graduate Academy combines professional development with meaningful on-the-job experience, designed to support your transition from university into the workplace. As a Graduate Data Scientist, you will work in the Performance and Analytics business unit and assist in solving business problems through innovative technical solutions and data insights. This year, we are looking for two Graduate Data Scientists.

One successful candidate will specifically be working on projects for the City of Gold Coast’s Environment, Heritage and Resilience Department. Within the department, a diverse range teams work together to deliver environmental, conservation and sustainability outcomes, including the Conservation Branch and the Waste and Resource Recovery Branch. The Conservation Branch protects, manages and restores the city’s natural environment for current and future generations, while the Waste and Resource Recovery Branch advances sustainable resource management outcomes. Working on conservation and waste data projects, you will help transform complex data into meaningful insights that support informed decision-making, drive innovation, and contribute to a more sustainable future for our community and environment.

The other successful candidate will be working on projects for the City of Gold Coast’s Infrastructure department, which manages public works, transport networks, and essential city assets for the Gold Coast. Working with asset, transport and utilities datasets, you will work on projects helping to create a safe and accessible city that meets the needs of our community both now and in the future. A key focus will be the delivery of high-value data insights from large structured and unstructured datasets, using modern tools and coding practices to drive automation and service improvements

The successful candidates will:

• Be proficient in programming languages such as R and Python.
• Be able to tailor communication style and content to suit different audiences, from technical peers to non-technical stakeholders.
• Possess basic SQL skills and an understanding of relational databases and database design.
• Demonstrate an understanding of statistical methods to analyse data and draw actionable insights.
• Have exposure to machine learning, deep learning and advanced modelling techniques and algorithms.
• Have knowledge across data science domains, such as classification, forecasting, unsupervised learning, Bayesian modelling, natural language processing, image processing, reinforcement learning and generative AI.
• Have skills/experience in AI concepts and technologies (e.g. LLMs, RAG, MCP, AI agents) and applying them to practical business challenges.
• Have experience with data visualisation tools, such as Power BI or Tableau.
• Have familiarity with version control systems (e.g. Git, Gitlab, Azure Dev Ops).
• Have skills/experience in GIS and spatial data analytics
• Have experience or coursework related to cloud data warehouse solutions (e.g. Snowflake, BigQuery, Microsoft Fabric) and cloud-based solutions (e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP).
