Job description

About Us

National Intermodal is a Government Business Enterprise, wholly owned by the Commonwealth of Australia, building the intermodal precincts that will reshape how goods move along Australia's east coast. It's infrastructure with a purpose: better, more sustainable supply chains that ultimately improve the way communities access the things they need. Behind that mission is a tight-knit team of engineering, rail, infrastructure and logistics specialists who think long-term and execute with precision.

About The Role

National Intermodal is seeking a General Manager Finance - Corporate to join our Finance & Technology team, based in our Sydney CBD office. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and deputising when required, you will lead business partnering, planning and decision support across our corporate functions, along with overseeing Financial Control, statutory reporting, tax and treasury for the whole organisation. This role needs a finance leader with energy, passion and drive: someone who gets out into the business, builds real partnerships with executives, and helps enable a portfolio of nationally significant precincts as they move from development into operational assets.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Partnering with the Senior Leadership Team and corporate function leaders as a trusted advisor. You'll bring commercial insight to investment proposals, business cases and resource allocation, and challenge assumptions where it counts.
  • Leading consolidated budgets, forecasts and long-range financial plans, pulling inputs from across the organisation into clear, decision-ready reporting for the Senior Leadership Team, Board, Audit & Risk Committee and shareholders.
  • Supporting the CFO on capital management and funding, covering equity submissions, debt facilities, liquidity, and forward-looking analysis of capital commitments as our precinct portfolio moves from planning into delivery and operations.
  • Leading Financial Control from end to end. This covers month-end and year-end close, statutory financial statements, technical accounting and external audit, plus newer areas such as climate-related financial disclosures and hedge accounting.
  • Overseeing tax compliance and treasury operations, and strengthening financial governance, delegations and controls in line with our Government Business Enterprise obligations.
  • Leading Finance's transformation agenda with Technology, optimising Microsoft Dynamics 365 and using automation, AI and advanced analytics to improve efficiency, controls and decision-making.
  • Leading, coaching and developing a high-performing finance team, building capability and succession depth as the organisation grows.
About You
  • Tertiary qualification in Finance, Accounting, Commerce, Economics or a related discipline, with CA or CPA. A strategic, enterprise-minded leader who isn't afraid to get hands-on.
  • You bring the depth of a large organisation but apply it pragmatically to our size and stage, and you get satisfaction from delivering through a small, capable team rather than a large function.
  • Significant senior finance leadership experience across financial control, business partnering, FP&A and management reporting, including reporting to Boards and shareholders.
  • Experience in an organisation with a large capital infrastructure portfolio. You understand how major capital programs are funded, governed and reported, and how the financial calls made today shape assets that will run for decades.
  • A business partner with energy, passion and drive. You build trust quickly, influence senior executives with confidence, and are comfortable challenging the status quo.
  • Strong technical accounting, statutory reporting, governance and controls expertise, along with experience across tax, cash management and treasury.
  • A track record of leading finance transformation, systems or process improvement, and a curiosity about how ERP, planning tools and AI can change the way Finance works.
  • A clear, compelling communicator who can turn complex financial information into practical decision-ready insights for Executive and Board audiences.

At National Intermodal, we are committed to our people and their development. If you're a finance leader who wants to help shape the finances of infrastructure that will move the nation's freight for generations, we'd love to hear from you.
