Job summary

SA Health’s Southern Adelaide Local Health Network is seeking a Flow Coordinator (Mental Health) to coordinate real-time patient flow, support bed utilisation and improve patient journeys across the Mental Health service.

Reporting to the Nursing Director, you will connect clinical teams with bed management and oversight, ensuring timely and safe care across the organisation while leading capacity projects and data reporting.

Qualifications

  • Must be a Registered Nurse with current practising certificate.
  • Must hold or be enrolled in an approved mental health course or have MH qualification.
  • Experience in coordinating patient flow and bed management is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate real-time patient flow across inpatient units and discharge processes to optimise bed utilisation.
  • Collaborate with nursing, medical and allied health teams to address capacity or access barriers.
  • Monitor care plans to ensure desired outcomes are achieved daily.
  • Identify and escalate flow issues using SALHN protocols and communication frameworks.
  • Support accurate data capture and reporting to inform operational decisions at ward and executive levels.

About the role:

Reporting to theNursing Director, this role is integral to connecting clinical teams, bed management, and patient journey oversight to support safe, timely care across the organisation.

Duties for the role will include:

  • Coordinating real-time patient flow across inpatient units, emergency pathways, and discharge processes to optimise bed utilisation.
  • Collaborating with nursing, medical, and allied health teams to identify and resolve capacity or access barriers.
  • Monitoring patient/client care plans to ensure appropriate care outcomes are achieved on a daily basis.
  • Monitoring and escalating emerging flow issues through established SALHN protocols and communication frameworks.
  • Supporting accurate data capture and reporting to inform operational decision-making at ward and executive level.

About you:

  • Registered as a Nurse by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and who holds a current practicing certificate.
  • Must be enrolled in an approved mental health course or hold a qualification in mental health practice.
  • Registered Nurse/Midwife with at least 3 years, full time equivalent, post registration experience.
  • Demonstrated competence in Mental Health nursing practice in accordance with the relevant standards
  • Experience in the leadership and direction of student nurses, enrolled nurses and less experienced registered nurses.
  • Effective communication, problem solving, conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet set timelines, whilst working under minimal supervision.
