Southern Machinery Services is seeking a highly skilled multi‑skilled metal tradesman - First Class Machinist Mechanical Fitter for a permanent full‑time role. Offering a generous salary range and a 38‑hour week, based at a site in SA.

The candidate will read drawings, select materials, and assemble machines, with extensive experience in mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, plus on‑site installation capabilities.

Qualifications

• Education: Relevant qualifications.
• Experience: At least 10 years of previous fitting or similar mechanical role experience.
• Technical skills: Reading technical drawings and using precision measuring tools.
• Knowledge: Mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems; safety procedures in industrial settings.
• Physical: Able to lift, bend, and stand for extended periods; good dexterity.
• Problem-solving: Diagnosing and troubleshooting machinery faults; efficient repairs.
• Communication: Clear communicator with team members and supervisors; follow instructions.
• Attention to detail: Accurate measurements and assembly.
• Certifications: Relevant trade certifications or safety training preferred.
• Adaptability: Flexible with different tasks and environments.

Job Brief:

Southern Machinery Services was established in 1986 as a specialist engineering company to provide a total engineering service to users of rotating and process machinery. We specialize in refurbishing plant and equipment and manufacture all parts in-house.

We are looking for a multi-skilled metal tradesman - First Class Machinist Mechanical Fitter.

Responsibilities

• Analyzing blueprints and specifications to select appropriate materials, methods, operation sequences, and machine settings.
• Installing fabricated metal components into products and assembling metal parts and subassemblies to create machines and equipment.
• Inspecting fabricated and assembled metal parts for precision, fit, and clearance using precision measuring tools.
• Adjusting guides, stops, and other controls on machining equipment, setting up necessary cutting and shaping tools and dies, and configuring controls for textile machinery.
• Shaping metal stock and castings to precise tolerances using tools for pressing, cutting, grinding, planning, boring, and drilling.
• Cutting, threading, bending, and installing hydraulic and pneumatic pipes and lines.
• Preparing pattern mechanisms for controlling textile machinery used in spinning, weaving, knitting, sewing, and tufting fabrics.
• Diagnosing faults, performing routine maintenance on machines, and overhauling and repairing mechanical components and fluid power systems.
• Potentially assembling and installing machines and equipment on-site.

Skills Required

Education and Qualifications:

• Relevant qualifications
• 10 years of experience

Experience: At least 10 years of previous fitting or similar mechanical role experience. Hands-on experience with machinery assembly and maintenance.

Technical Skills: Proficient in reading technical drawings and using precision measuring tools. Skilled in metalworking tools and equipment.

Knowledge: Understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. Familiar with safety procedures in industrial settings.

Physical Abilities: Able to lift, bend, and stand for extended periods. Good hand-eye coordination and dexterity.

Problem-Solving Skills: Strong at diagnosing and troubleshooting machinery faults. Efficient in repairs and maintenance.

Communication Skills: Clear communicator with team members and supervisors. Competent in following and providing instructions.

Attention to Detail: Accurate in measurements and assembly.

Certifications and License: Relevant trade certifications or safety training preferred.
