Job description

Location: Canberra
Employment type: Full-time, apprenticeship (4-year term)
Reports to: Leading Hand / Construction Manager

About us

We're a specialist cladding company delivering high-quality external cladding across residential and commercial projects. We employ our own carpenters rather than subcontracting, which means we control the quality of every job from frame to final fix. Our teams take pride in getting the detail right; the flashings, the set outs, the junctions that most people never notice but that determine whether a façade lasts.

The role

We're looking for a 1st Year Apprentice Carpenter to join one of our crews and start their trade the right way, under experienced tradespeople, learning cladding properly from day one. You'll be paired with a Leading Hand and senior carpenters who'll show you how it's actually done, not just how to get by.

This is a great fit for someone who's finished school (or had a crack at something else) and wants a genuine trade, a company that keeps them busy year-round, and a crew that'll teach them something.

Hours

Ordinary hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm

Reasonable notice will be given for weekend work wherever possible.

This is a five-day week — no RDO cycle.

TAFE/off-the-job training days as required by your apprenticeship.

What you'll be doing

On the tools

Assist with installing cladding systems (fibre cement, aluminium panel, timber, metal, weatherboard)

Help frame, batten, and set out substrates ready for cladding

Learn to install cavity systems, breather membranes, flashings, and weatherproofing details

Carry out basic fixings and finishing work under supervision

Keep the site tidy, materials organised, and tools looked after

Learning the trade

Work alongside your Leading Hand and senior carpenters on a daily basis

Ask questions and get shown the "why," not just the "how"

Build up your plan-reading skills over time

Attend TAFE and complete all apprenticeship coursework

Take on more responsibility on site as your skills grow

Safety

Attend daily pre-start meetings and toolbox talks

Understand and follow SWMS

Learn safe work practices around scaffold, EWP, and height safety

Report incidents, near misses, and hazards immediately — no matter how small

What you'll need

White Card (Construction Induction) or willingness to obtain before starting

Current driver's licence (or working towards one) and reliable way to get to site

Right to work in Australia

A genuine interest in carpentry and building a trade

Reliable, on time, and ready to work

Willingness to enrol in a Certificate III in Carpentry apprenticeship

Highly regarded

Some work experience in construction or trades (even informal)

Basic hand tools of your own (we'll help you build your kit)

Working at Heights ticket (or willing to obtain)

A physical, hands-on attitude and a willingness to learn

The kind of person we're after

Turns up every day, on time, ready to go

Asks questions instead of guessing

Takes feedback onboard and grows from it

Wants to actually learn the trade, not just collect a wage

Works safely and looks out for the people around them

What we offer

Award apprentice wages with steady annual increases as you progress

Steady pipeline of work — no seasonal gaps or being laid off between jobs

All PPE and consumables supplied

Full trade training and TAFE fees covered

A crew that will actually teach you, not just leave you holding boards

A clear path from apprentice to qualified carpenter to leading hand for those who want it
