About EXS Services

EXS Services brings together Extreme Excavators and Steelarc Engineering, with more than 40 years of combined industry experience. We provide engineering, fabrication, mechanical maintenance, workshop and field services to the resources and industrial sectors.

Based in Paget, Mackay, we support clients across Queensland and New South Wales, with expansion into Western Australia underway. As we bring our businesses together, we are seeking a Financial Controller to lead our finance team and support the next stage of growth.

About the role

As our senior finance leader, you will take ownership of the finance function, lead and develop the existing team, and provide the Managing Director and Board with clear, reliable financial and commercial insight.

This is a hands-on leadership role, working closely with operational and project leaders to understand job performance, manage cash and improve profitability. You will oversee reporting, budgeting, forecasting and compliance, while strengthening controls and the flow of information between our job management and costing system, and MYOB.

What you will do
  • Lead and mentor the finance team across receivables, payables, payroll and financial accounting, with clear responsibilities and review processes.

  • Own the group month-end close, balance sheet reconciliations, management reporting and Board inputs, explaining variances and margin movements.

  • Oversee job costing, work in progress (WIP) and revenue recognition. Review open jobs with operational leaders, including costs to complete, forecast margins and unbilled work.

  • Strengthen data quality and reconcile transfers into MYOB so revenue, job costs, payroll and WIP are complete and accurate.

  • Lead annual budgets, rolling forecasts and integrated profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow forecasting.

  • Manage cash flow planning, banking and financier reporting, including covenant and invoice finance requirements where applicable.

  • Oversee BAS, FBT, payroll tax and other statutory obligations, and coordinate year-end accounts and audit preparation with external advisers.

  • Partner with operational leaders on tender margins, commercial claims and project performance, turning financial information into practical decisions.

  • Improve financial controls, systems and processes across the group, including intercompany reconciliations and consolidated reporting.

What you will bring
  • CA or CPA qualification, or nearing completion, with a degree in accounting, finance or commerce.

  • At least five years of relevant finance experience, with demonstrated ownership of month-end reporting, budgeting and forecasting.

  • Strong job costing and WIP experience in a project-based business, ideally engineering, fabrication, mining services, construction, manufacturing or trade contracting.

  • Proven experience leading a small finance team and working effectively with operational managers and senior leadership.

  • Advanced Excel skills and strong accounting or ERP systems capability, including reconciling operational systems to financial accounts.

  • A practical commercial approach, attention to detail and the confidence to question data, resolve issues and communicate clearly.

Experience with JAQ and MYOB will be highly regarded, along with multi-entity reporting, Australian payroll and award obligations, banking facilities and invoice finance.

What we offer
  • A competitive salary package reflecting your experience and capability.

  • Direct access to the Managing Director and Board, with real influence on business performance.

  • The opportunity to shape the finance function as the merged business grows across multiple states.

  • A supportive, down-to-earth team that values accountability, collaboration and practical solutions.
