Job summary

Department of Industry, Science and Resources is seeking a hands-on facilities management leader to oversee operations across a portfolio of specialist scientific and technical facilities. You will supervise facilities staff, manage maintenance and compliance programs, and engage with contractors and stakeholders to ensure safe, compliant and reliable services.

You will lead planning for asset lifecycle, risk management, and continuous improvement while supporting critical science and research

Qualifications

• Current Australian Driver Licence is required.

• Qualifications in facilities management, engineering, building services, construction, property or related discipline.
• Experience in laboratory, research, technical, industrial or other highly serviced facilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day facilities management activities across allocated facilities.
• Manage and participate in a 24/7 on call roster to support site operations.
• Manage facilities maintenance programs and contractor performance.
• Monitor asset condition and contribute to lifecycle planning and renewal activities.
• Lead the planning and delivery of minor works and facilities improvement projects.
• Develop and monitor maintenance budgets, forecasts and expenditure.
• Manage operational risks and support business continuity activities.
• Ensure compliance with workplace health and safety, environmental and security requirements.
• Coordinate statutory inspections, certifications and essential services maintenance.
• Build productive relationships with facility users, stakeholders and service providers.
• Provide facilities management advice and support across the property portfolio.

About the team

The Property and Place Branch supports the department by providing safe, inclusive, functional and reliable workplaces across Australia. We partner with business areas to ensure facilities meet operational, safety and security requirements while supporting the department's science, research and corporate functions.

The Specialised Facilities Management team is responsible for managing complex scientific, laboratory and technical facilities within the department's property portfolio. We oversee facilities operations, maintenance programs, contractor performance, compliance activities and minor works projects to ensure facilities remain safe, compliant and fit for purpose.

Our work supports critical science and research activities while enabling staff, visitors and partners to operate safely and effectively.

The opportunity

This is a hands-on operational leadership role responsible for managing facilities services across a portfolio of specialist scientific, laboratory and technical facilities.

You will lead facilities operations, maintenance programs, contractor performance and compliance activities, while providing advice and technical support to stakeholders on facilities management matters.

The role also supervises operational staff and contributes to the planning and delivery of maintenance activities, minor works projects and asset management initiatives.

Our ideal candidate

We are seeking an experienced facilities management professional who can successfully manage facilities services within complex operational environments.

You will be able to demonstrate:

• Facilities operations, maintenance and minor works management experience.
• Strong contractor and service provider management skills
• Experience managing budgets, forecasts and operational expenditure
• Sound understanding of workplace health and safety, compliance and risk management requirements
• Strong stakeholder engagement and customer service skills.
• Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience leading staff and coordinating operational work programs
• The ability to exercise sound judgement and solve problems in a dynamic operational environment
• Ability to manage priorities and maintain critical business continuity related functions in fast-paced environments.
• HVAC, electrical or related trade experience supporting critical infrastructure and 24/7 site operations.
• Understanding of Building Management Systems and ability to interpret them.
• A commitment to safe, compliant and customer-focused service delivery

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Notes

This is a predominantly site-based role supporting specialist facilities within the department's property portfolio. Remote or working from home arrangements are generally not possible.

Regular attendance at operational sites is required to oversee facilities operations, maintenance activities, contractor performance and stakeholder engagement.

Travel between sites may be required.

Participation in an emergency call-out roster may be required and will be remunerated in accordance with the provisions of the DISR Enterprise Agreement 2024-2027.

The role involves some safe manual handling tasks (e.g. furniture moves).

A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette.
