Job summary

The Office of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (IGIS) is seeking an Assistant Director, Legal Advising within the Legal and Assurance Branch in Canberra. The role focuses on providing practical legal advice, training, and preparing submissions for parliamentary committees.

Applicants should hold a law degree, be eligible for ACT admission, and have at least five years of post-admission experience. Relocation support is available for candidates relocating to Canberra.

Qualifications

• A degree in law from an Australian university, or a comparable overseas degree recognised in Australia for admission to practice.
• A practising certificate, or eligibility to hold a practising certificate, in the ACT.
• Admission on the roll of an Australian State or Territory Supreme Court, or of the High Court of Australia.
• A minimum of five years Post Admission Experience.
• Experience drafting high quality legal advice, especially in statutory interpretation and/or administrative law.
• Relevant experience in legal policy and legislation review.
• A developed understanding of national security and intelligence legislative frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Provide clear and practical legal advice to senior management and internal stakeholders on a range of different legal matters.
• Provide legal education and training.
• Prepare submissions for parliamentary committees.
