Job summary

Australian Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources is seeking a Deputy Commissioner Safeguards and Assessment (SES Band 1) to establish and lead the Commission's safeguards function in Melbourne/Canberra. The role focuses on strategic leadership, robust economic analysis, and high-level advisory support to government decision-makers.

You will oversee disputes, injurious imports assessment, and multi-disciplinary teams, shaping policy, and ensuring rigorous, evidence-based findings

Qualifications

• Experience leading complex economic, industry, assessment and regulatory or public policy functions.
• Ability to provide strategic advice on complex economic, industry or trade-related issues to senior executives or government stakeholders.
• Strong ability to interpret market data and regulatory implications for decision-making.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for the safeguards function and its operations.
• Lead safeguards inquiries, market monitoring and economic/industry assessments.
• Provide authoritative advice on complex economic and trade matters to government stakeholders.
• Ensure delivery of branch priorities and outcomes.
• Lead risk-based case assessment and triage to support upfront review.
• Build trusted relationships with industry, government agencies and international counterparts.
• Develop capability across analysis, inquiry management and trade remedies practice.
• Maintain governance and risk management across the branch.
• Represent the Commission in high-level domestic and international forums on safeguards and policy matters.
