About the Opportunity

Diligent Group Australia is partnering with an established Queensland-based engineering and structural steel fabrication business to recruit an experienced Senior Structural Steel Estimator.

We're looking for more than someone who can simply price a job. We need someone who understands how projects are built, can develop accurate estimates from first principles and has the commercial confidence to present, negotiate and win tenders.

Our client prides itself on delivering quality workmanship and successful project outcomes.

This is an opportunity for an experienced estimator to take ownership of the tendering process, work directly with the Directors and play an important role in securing new projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Independently manage the estimating and tendering process from initial enquiry through to contract award.


• Interpret engineering drawings, specifications and project requirements.


• Prepare detailed estimates from first principles, including labour hours, materials, fabrication, equipment and installation costs.


• Develop accurate estimates using Excel and spreadsheet-based calculations rather than relying solely on estimating software.


• Understand construction methodologies and account for project-specific requirements, including quality assurance, inspection hold points and site constraints.


• Obtain and assess supplier and subcontractor quotations.


• Identify project risks, scope gaps, exclusions and opportunities for cost efficiencies.


• Prepare professional tender submissions and commercial proposals.


• Present, negotiate and sell tenders based on quality, methodology and overall value rather than simply the lowest price.


• Build strong client relationships and actively contribute to securing new projects.

About You

We're looking for a commercially minded, technically capable estimator who can work independently and take ownership of their projects.

To be successful, you'll have:

• Extensive structural steel fabrication and installation estimating experience.


• Strong first-principles estimating skills and advanced Excel capabilities.


• Proven ability to independently calculate labour hours, resources and construction costs.


• Sound understanding of fabrication processes, construction methodologies and site installation.


• Experience managing tenders from initial enquiry through to contract award.


• Confidence presenting estimates, negotiating with clients and securing projects.


• Strong commercial awareness and the ability to understand individual client requirements.


• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage competing deadlines without close supervision.
