Job summary

CGC Recruitment partners with a Sydney-based commercial fitout contractor to recruit a Construction Estimator. The role focuses on estimating and tendering for retail, hospitality and workplace interiors, from initial enquiry through tender submission and handover.

The dedicated estimating position will review drawings, prepare BOQs, price materials and subs, and manage multiple tenders while protecting project margins.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Construction Estimator in commercial fitout, retail, hospitality or interior construction.
• Ability to interpret architectural drawings, specifications and tender documents.
• Experience completing quantity take-offs, BOQs and cost estimates.
• Experience preparing tender submissions and procurement.

Responsibilities

• Prepare accurate estimates for commercial fitout, retail, hospitality and refurbishment projects.
• Review drawings, specifications, tender documentation and project requirements.
• Complete detailed quantity take-offs, material measurements and cost breakdowns.
• Prepare bills of quantities (BOQs), scopes of work and detailed tender submissions.
• Obtain and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations.
• Estimate labour, materials, subcontractor packages, preliminaries and project costs.
• Identify potential cost savings, value engineering opportunities and tender risks.
• Manage multiple tenders and meet submission deadlines.
• Liaise with suppliers, subcontractors, project managers and senior management.
• Assist with procurement planning and handover of successful tenders to delivery team.
• Maintain estimating databases and supplier pricing.

About the Opportunity

We are partnering with an established and growing commercial fitout contractor based in Sydney's Canterbury / Bankstown area to recruit an experienced Construction Estimator. The business specialises in delivering high-quality retail, hospitality, workplace and commercial fitout projects, working with a diverse range of clients across Sydney. Due to a growing pipeline of projects, they are looking to bring on a commercially minded Estimator who can take ownership of the estimating and tendering process, from initial enquiry through to successful tender submission and project handover. This is a dedicated estimating position, rather than a combined Project Manager / Estimator role. The successful candidate will have a strong background in construction estimating, with a preference for candidates experienced in commercial interiors, retail and hospitality fitouts.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare accurate and competitive estimates for commercial fitout, retail, hospitality and refurbishment projects.
• Review architectural drawings, specifications, tender documentation and project requirements.
• Complete detailed quantity take-offs, material measurements and cost breakdowns.
• Prepare bills of quantities (BOQs), scopes of work and detailed tender submissions.
• Obtain and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations.
• Estimate labour, materials, subcontractor packages, preliminaries and associated project costs.
• Identify potential cost savings, value engineering opportunities and commercial risks.
• Manage multiple tenders simultaneously while meeting submission deadlines.
• Liaise with suppliers, subcontractors, project managers and senior management throughout the tendering process.
• Assist with procurement planning and ensure accurate handover of successful tenders to the project delivery team.
• Maintain estimating databases, supplier pricing and historical project cost information.
• Ensure estimates are commercially competitive while protecting project margins and profitability.

Experience & Skills Required

• Proven experience as a Construction Estimator, ideally within commercial fitout, retail, hospitality or interior construction.
• Strong understanding of fitout construction methodologies, materials, trades and associated costs.
• Experience estimating projects involving retail tenancies, restaurants, cafés, franchise fitouts, workplace interiors or commercial refurbishments.
• Ability to independently manage the estimating process from initial tender review through to final submission.
• Strong ability to interpret architectural drawings, specifications and construction documentation.
• Experience completing quantity take-offs, BOQs, supplier comparisons and detailed cost estimates.
• Good understanding of subcontractor pricing, procurement and tender negotiations.
• Strong commercial awareness, particularly around cost control, project margins and identifying tender risks.
• Excellent attention to detail, organisation and time management.
• Proficiency in Excel and relevant construction estimating software.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with project delivery teams.

Highly Regarded

• Experience estimating retail and hospitality fitouts for major brands, franchises or national retailers.
• Knowledge of Category 1 base-build and Category 2 fitout works, including cold-shell and warm-shell tenancies.
• Experience with custom architectural joinery, cabinetry, shopfronts and specialist interior finishes.
• Exposure to design-and-construct projects.
• Existing relationships with commercial fitout subcontractors and suppliers.
• Experience working with offshore suppliers or manufacturing partners.
• Background in quantity surveying, construction management or a relevant trade.
