Job summary

Ventia is seeking a Hydrographer / Environmental Scientist to operate across Victoria and southern NSW in diverse environments. You will lead field-based environmental monitoring, collect streamflow and water quality data, and support data management with industry tools.

The role combines hands-on fieldwork with advanced monitoring technology, including ADCPs and water quality analytics, contributing to major environmental projects and providing critical data for water management decisions.

Qualifications

• Experienced in groundwater/surface water monitoring.
• Diploma in Water Operations or Bachelor of Environmental Science (or similar).
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel and familiar with hydrological software.
• Skilled in using SDI-12 and 4-20mA instrumentation.

Responsibilities

• Conduct field based environmental monitoring of surface and groundwater systems.
• Collect, analyse, and report streamflow and water quality data.
• Install and maintain hydrometric stations and instrumentation.
• Perform site surveys, discharge measurements, and cross-sectional profiling using ADVs and ADCPs.
• Manage data using HYDSTRA, ESDAT and Campbells.
• Ensure compliance with OH&S protocols and maintain high data quality standards.
• Coordinate with laboratories and stakeholders throughout project lifecycles.

You will be at the forefront of environmental monitoring, working on critical water resource and environmental projects for major government, defence, and infrastructure clients. From conducting streamflow measurements during high-flow events to deploying cutting edge monitoring technology in remote locations, you will play a key role in collecting the data that informs important environmental and water management decisions.

About the Role
This hands-on role combines fieldwork, advanced technology, data analysis, and problem solving, offering the opportunity to build expertise across a wide range of environmental disciplines. You will work with industry leading equipment including ADCPs, water quality skills in hydrography, environmental monitoring and data management.

Whether you are troubleshooting a monitoring station, surveying river cross-sections, collecting groundwater samples, or analysing complex environmental datasets, you will be part of a team delivering meaningful outcomes for some of Australia’s most significant environmental projects.

Under the guidance of the Regional Manager, you will –

• Conduct field based environmental monitoring of surface and groundwater systems
• Collect, analyse, and report streamflow and water quality data
• Install and maintain hydrometric stations and instrumentation
• Perform site surveys, discharge measurements, and cross-sectional profiling using ADV’s and ADCP’s
• Manage data using platform such HYDSTRA, ESDAT and Campbells
• Ensure compliance with OH&S protocols and maintain high data quality standards
• Coordinate with laboratories and stakeholders throughout project lifecycles

Required Skills and Experience

• Experienced in groundwater / surface water monitoring
• Enrolled in or completed a Diploma in Water Operations or Bachelor of Environmental Science (or similar)
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel and familiar with hydrological software
• Skilled in using SDI-12 and 4-20mA instrumentation
• A strong communicator with excellent time management and self-motivation
• Willing to travel including overnight stays
• Certified in First Aid and CPR
• Current drivers licence (4x4 driving certification and experience – desirable)
