The Environment team plays a critical role in supporting Shell’s environmental requirements by ensuring environmental compliance, managing environmental risks, and driving continuous improvement across our operations. As the Environmental Lead, you will be a key member of the West Safety & Environment Leadership Team, leading a team of environmental professionals supporting both the Prelude FLNG and Crux assets. In this role, you will provide environmental leadership, technical guidance, and strategic direction to ensure environmental risks are effectively managed, and environmental requirements are embedded into planning, decision-making, and operational execution. You will partner closely with operational, technical, project, and HSSE teams to ensure environmental commitments are understood, implemented, and integrated into day-to-day activities.

As a people leader, you will foster a high-performing and inclusive team culture while building environmental capability across the organization. This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact by influencing environmental performance, regulatory compliance, and sustainable business outcomes within a complex offshore operating environment.

Accountabilities:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of environmental professionals supporting the Prelude and Crux assets.

  • Build strong partnerships across Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Wells, Projects, and HSSE functions to embed environmental stewardship into business activities.

  • Serve as the primary environmental focal point, providing expert advice and support to enable safe, compliant, and sustainable operations.

  • Drive integration of environmental considerations into operational planning, execution, and strategic decision-making.

Environmental Plan Implementation & Compliance
  • Ensure effective implementation, maintenance, and operationalization of the Prelude and Crux Environmental Plans.

  • Promote understanding of environmental obligations and commitments across operational teams.

  • Monitor compliance with environmental approvals, regulatory requirements, and Shell’s HSSE & SP and SEAM frameworks.

  • Support the preparation, management, and delivery of environmental approvals, revisions, and regulatory submissions.

Environmental Performance & Risk Management
  • Lead the identification, assessment, and management of environmental risks and opportunities.

  • Ensure environmental controls and requirements are effectively applied across operational activities.

  • Drive proactive management of key environmental aspects including emissions, waste, water, biodiversity, discharges, and environmental incident prevention.

  • Identify and implement risk mitigation measures to manage high environmental risks and improve performance outcomes.

Assurance & Continuous Improvement
  • Lead environmental assurance activities and support delivery of Shell Australia’s assurance program.

  • Monitor environmental performance, identify emerging risks, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Facilitate learning from incidents, audits, assurance findings, and industry best practices.

  • Simplify processes and ways of working while maintaining effective governance and risk management.

Stakeholder Engagement & Advocacy
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators and industry bodies.

  • Provide visible environmental leadership and advocacy across the organization.

  • Influence decision‑making to ensure environmental considerations are balanced alongside operational, safety, and business objectives.

  • Promote environmental awareness and capability development through coaching, communication, and engagement.

What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing teams within a complex operational environment.

  • Strong commitment to Goal Zero, environmental stewardship, and personal accountability.

  • Significant experience managing environmental aspects, impacts, and risks within industrial, energy, offshore, or resources sectors.

  • Strong knowledge of environmental compliance frameworks, approvals, regulatory requirements, and environmental management systems.

  • Broad understanding of environmental disciplines including air quality, carbon and greenhouse gases, water management, waste management, biodiversity, biosecurity, and emergency response.

  • Experience implementing and operationalizing Environmental Plans and regulatory commitments.

  • Ability to translate environmental requirements into practical, operationally effective solutions.

  • Strong risk management capability with a proven ability to balance compliance, business performance, and operational outcomes.

  • Knowledge of Australian and international environmental legislation and standards, particularly within offshore operations.

  • Understanding of Shell’s environmental commitments, including Respecting Nature and Net Zero Emissions ambitions.

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication, presentation, and influencing skills.

  • Proven ability to partner effectively with senior leaders and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Strong coaching and mentoring capabilities, with a passion for developing people and building inclusive, high‑performing teams.

  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and fostering a positive team culture.
