Job summary

Swinburne University seeks a Technical Officer in Electrical & Electronics to provide hands-on technical support across electronics, instrumentation and control systems within the School of Engineering. You will manage laboratories, the components store and procurement, ensuring safe, well-equipped teaching spaces and facilities.

You will configure embedded platforms, perform soldering and testing, and help maintain equipment while collaborating with academics, researchers and students.

Qualifications

• Completion of an advanced diploma with relevant technical work experience, or a post-trade certificate with extensive experience as a technician; or an equivalent combination of relevant technical experience, education, and training.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical support across electronics, instrumentation and control systems used in teaching and research.
• Maintain and operate laboratory equipment, troubleshoot faults and undertake basic functional testing.
• Configure and fault‑find embedded and microcontroller platforms such as Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi and ESP32.
• Undertake through‑hole and surface‑mount soldering, electronic rework, wiring verification and component identification.
• Use test and measurement equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, signal generators and data acquisition systems.
• Manage laboratory components, stock and inventory, including sourcing equipment, obtaining quotations, placing orders and monitoring deliveries.
• Contribute to laboratory safety through SOPs, Safe Work Instructions and Risk Assessments.
• Communicate technical and safety information clearly to students, academics, researchers and colleagues with varying levels of technical experience.
• Identify opportunities to improve laboratory safety, processes and systems and support practical solutions.
