Job summary

National Library of Australia (NLA) in Canberra is seeking a Senior Storage Engineer to support the delivery, operation and continuous improvement of the library's ICT services. Responsibilities

• Design, maintain and innovatively evolve NLAs large-scale on-premise storage platforms through ongoing management of storage, networking and restoration capabilities.
• Design, implementation and management of data preservation & integrity management systems.
• Designing, implementing and operating enterprise backup platforms, including off-site replication strategies, disaster recovery and business continuity plans and ensuring tape operations (LTO libraries) are reliable.
• Maintaining storage operations and performance management, including monitoring array health and coordinating upgrades and lifecycle replacements.
• Implement and enhance cybersecurity controls to protect core ICT systems.
• Support procurement, contract management, and vendor relationships.

Role Description

Branch Overview

Digital Branch is responsible for aligning technology and business strategy and all aspects of technology planning, operations, and service delivery. This includes designing, developing, and operating digital library services, corporate technology services, and building digital capability to ensure the workplace and infrastructure can meet future challenges.

The Digital Branch is responsible for a range of functions including:

• Strategy and architecture
• Cybersecurity risk and governance
• Technology operations
• Knowledge management and digital workplace, including the intranet and records management
• Data governance and management, including business intelligence and reporting capability
• Portfolio management and program and project delivery
• Product management, including overseeing UX, and agile methodologies
• Digital Preservation and Web Archiving.

Section/team overview

The Technology Operations Section is responsible for the operations and support of a wide range of IT systems and environments underpinning the day-to-day activities of the NLA.

The responsibilities of the Technology Operations Section seek to recognise the changing and complex environment of digitisation. Their responsibilities include the:

• Operations, support and maintenance, test, production and business continuity environments
• Provision of Service Desk services for the systems utilised and workstation environments
• Cybersecurity operations, and the development of policy and a strategic approach for building cybersecurity capability.

Role overview

The Senior Storage Engineer role provides specialist technical expertise to support the delivery, operation, and continuous improvement of the NLA's ICT services. Operating within the Technology Operations Section, the role contributes to both business-as-usual activities and project delivery across NLA network, systems, data, and backup and recovery environments, ensuring the availability, integrity, and resilience of critical information assets.

The role will have accountability for tasks and decisions relevant to:

• The design, maintenance and innovative evolution of the NLAs large-scale on-premise storage platforms through the ongoing management of storage, networking and restoration capabilities. This includes defining storage tiers, designing storage architectures and forecasting long-term capacity needs to cater for growing digital collections, and data restoration services
• Design, implementation and management of data preservation & an integrity management systems
• Designing, implementing and operating enterprise backup platforms, including managing off-site replication strategies, maintaining and testing Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity plans and ensuring tape operations (LTO libraries) are reliable and aligned with archival policies
• Maintaining storage operations and performance management, including monitoring array health, performance and utilisaitun, optimising performance for diverse workloads and coordinating upgrades, patching and lifecycle replacement of hardware.
• Implement and enhance cybersecurity controls to protect core ICT systems
• Support procurement, contract management, and vendor relationships

To fulfil the requirements of this a minimum Baseline Clearance, or the ability to gain, is needed.

• Lead, monitor, review, and evaluate team and individual performance and provide regular feedback to team members.

• Lead the decision making and strategic planning within the allocated work area, fostering and supporting Section/Branch/NLA goals and objectives to meet assigned outcomes.
