Department of Education, Western Australia is seeking a dynamic leader to chair the WA Student Council, ensuring student voices shape education strategy. The role emphasizes authentic student engagement, collaboration with schools and regions, and alignment with Aboriginal wellbeing standards.
You will work within Statewide Services, fostering inclusive environments, preparing reports and briefing notes, and partnering with external stakeholders to inform policy and practice.
This is a 13 month fixed term, full-time position commencing December 2026 with possible extension (12 months) and/or permanency
Statewide Services provides the services and supports required by schools to enable student achievement and educational outcomes, with a focus on those students and schools that need it most. Schools can submit a Request for Assistance to access support when facing significant challenges, for example support required for whole school practices where student wellbeing, engagement performance, and/or progress is at significant risk.
Are you an enthusiastic, energetic and highly engaging leader who is passionate about ensuring student voice is heard and meaningfully informs the work of the Department of Education?
The WA Student Council provides public school students with a direct opportunity to share their perspectives on issues that affect their education and experience at school. A key focus of this role is to lead the Council and other student voice forums, build authentic connections with young people and create meaningful opportunities for their ideas, experiences and perspectives to inform Departmental work.
The Council’s strength lies in its diverse membership. You will create productive, inclusive and safe environments where all students feel valued, heard and supported to contribute. This requires a culturally responsive approach and a commitment to strengthening the wellbeing, engagement and achievement of Aboriginal children and young people. The delivery of this initiative will be informed by the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework.
Building strong and authentic relationships will be central to your success. You will work closely with students, schools and regions, as well as colleagues across Statewide Services and Central Services, and with community, government and not-for-profit organisations. You will bring strong interpersonal and communication skills and the confidence to engage authentically with young people while also developing trusted, productive relationships with colleagues, senior leaders and external stakeholders.
This is a role for someone who enjoys working collaboratively as part of a team, while also being able to work autonomously and take initiative. You will contribute to branch, Directorate and Statewide Services priorities and projects, respond flexibly to emerging needs, and build effective connections across the Department to support successful outcomes.
You will need to bring strong organisational, planning and analytical skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, attend to detail and translate strategic and operational directions into practical action. The role will also involve preparing complex reports, briefing notes and advice for a range of audiences.
Above all, we are looking for someone who is energised by working with young people, values diverse perspectives, builds strong relationships and is committed to creating meaningful opportunities for students to influence the work of their education system.
