Job summary

News Corp Australia is seeking a Python backend engineer to build and scale AI systems powering editorial products. You will own model quality, measurement, and cost/latency as the systems scale, working directly with journalists and editors in a hybrid setup.

The role offers a split between Southbank or Surry Hills offices with two days remote, promoting collaboration with News Corp's diverse brands and a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment.

Qualifications

• Strong Python backend experience in production environments.
• Experience building LLM-powered applications on Gemini, OpenAI or Anthropic models.
• Multi-agent orchestration with a framework; Google ADK or LangGraph is acceptable.
• Solid RAG with embeddings, chunking, grounding and citations.
• Scalable concurrency: queues, rate limiting and retries.
• GCP experience, including Cloud Run and Cloud Run Jobs.
• 3+ years engineering experience.
• Nice to have Vertex AI and related agent engines.
• Knowledge of observability tooling such as OpenTelemetry.

Responsibilities

• Build and scale AI systems behind editorial products.
• Own quality and proper measurement of system outputs.
• Keep cost and latency at sensible levels as we scale.
• Collaborate with journalists and editors to meet newsroom needs.
• Develop retrieval, agents and pipelines for production use.
