Job summary

Rights In Action Inc is an independent advocacy organisation focused on protecting and advancing the rights of people with disabilities. The Engagement Officer role supports individuals through NDIS processes, delivers community engagement, and contributes to organisational targets.

The role requires strong communication, a commitment to human rights, and knowledge of disability legislation, with duties spanning frontline advocacy to systemic responses within funded geographic boundaries.

Qualifications

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
• Ability to plan, implement, and review advocacy strategies.
• Proficient with computer software, time management, and record keeping.
• Understanding of disability rights legislation and advocacy processes.

Responsibilities

• Deliver advocacy through client action plans, information provision, referrals, and support to people with disabilities, their families, and carers.
• Conduct risk assessments and visit clients in various settings including supported accommodation and hospitals.
• Provide person-led advocacy, increase knowledge of rights, and support individuals in achieving advocacy goals.
• Support clients at tribunals, courts, and hearings (e.g., QCAT, ART, Mental Health Review Tribunal).
• Identify systemic issues and contribute to responses through submissions, reports, and campaigns.
• Support NDIS participants with internal reviews and external appeals.
• Deliver education sessions on disability rights and the NDIS.
• Establish and maintain links with community stakeholders and disability networks.
• Maintain accurate client records and databases.
• Attend staff meetings, case conferences, and external forums.
