Job summary

The Onset Group seeks a Director of Engineering in Sydney to lead an engineering organisation of about 40 people in a hybrid environment. The role focuses on building stronger managers, improving how the team works, and introducing the right level of structure without slowing delivery.

Ideal candidates are experienced engineering leaders or strong up-and-coming leaders ready for a broader scope, reporting to the CPTO and shaping the function with the team.

Director of Engineering | Sydney | Hybrid | $250k–$300k + Bonus + Equity.

We’re working with one of Australia’s fastest-growing consumer technology businesses to find their next Director of Engineering. The engineering team has grown rapidly to around 40 people, and they now need a leader who can help take it through its next stage; building stronger managers, improving how the team works and introducing the right amount of structure without slowing things down.

This is a great opportunity for either an experienced Engineering leader or a strongup-and-coming engineering leader who is ready for a bigger role. You might currently be a Senior Engineering Manager, Head of Engineering or Director leading several teams and managers, but you’re ambitious and want the chance to lead an entire engineering function. You’ll report to an experienced CPTO and have plenty of room to shape the team rather than inherit a finished playbook.

The technology environment is modern and high-scale, supporting a consumer marketplace, mobile products, payments and a growing set of commercial products and integrations. AI is also becoming a core part of how the engineering team works, with a real focus on AI-assisted and agentic software development, automation and rethinking how software gets built.
