Our client is a leading engineering consultancy based in Melbourne, Victoria, specialising in innovative grid connection and design solutions for high voltage (HV) infrastructure and renewable energy projects. They work across the full project lifecycle-from early engineering to commissioning-delivering high-impact substations, wind, solar, and battery energy storage system (BESS) developments. Responsibilities

As Design Manager, you will lead the end-to-end design delivery of greenfield and brownfield HV substations and electrical Balance of Plant (eBOP) systems for renewable projects including wind, solar, and BESS.

• Managing multidisciplinary design teams across primary, secondary, civil, structural, and protection/control disciplines, ensuring compliance with Network Service Providers (NSP), Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), and client standards.
• Coordinating design inputs throughout procurement, construction, and commissioning phases to guarantee seamless project execution.
• Collaborating closely with procurement teams on tendering, equipment selection, and vendor integration.
• Leading design reviews, constructability assessments, and managing design documentation to deliver timely, high-quality outputs.
• Overseeing interface management across all project stages and disciplines.
• Monitoring and reporting on project performance metrics including cost, quality, and schedule.
• Proactively engaging with clients, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), NSPs, and subcontractors to align project outcomes.
• Supporting internal engineering capability development and mentoring junior engineers.

Skills Required

• Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related field; Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status or progress towards chartership is preferred.
• Over 10 years’ experience managing HV substation and renewable energy project designs.
• Proven ability to deliver multidisciplinary designs on time, within budget, and to specification.
• Strong technical knowledge of HV substation design, eBOP systems, protection and control, and SCADA integration.
• Experience coordinating across engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
• Excellent organisational, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Leadership qualities with the ability to mentor junior engineers.
• Adaptability and problem-solving skills to succeed in a fast-paced, complex project environment.
