Job summary

Clicks IT Recruitment is seeking a Senior IT Database Designer to lead PostgreSQL design and optimization on AWS. The role focuses on secure, scalable database services supporting critical business applications in an agile, cloud-native environment.

You will collaborate with Architecture, Development and DevOps teams to implement robust database solutions and mentor peers, while ensuring reliable production operations in an enterprise context.

Senior IT Database Designer - AWS PostgreSQL

Melbourne, Brisbane or Wollongong
12 month contract with 12 months extension

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced IT Database Designer to join a high-performing technology team delivering and supporting enterprise-scale cloud platforms.
Working within an Agile delivery environment, you will play a key role in designing, implementing, optimising and supporting PostgreSQL database solutions hosted in AWS. You'll collaborate closely with Architecture, Development and DevOps teams to ensure secure, scalable and high-performing database services that support critical business applications.
This role is ideal for a database professional who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, driving continuous improvement and contributing to cloud-native solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement PostgreSQL database schemas, indexes and database structures.
• Develop and optimise SQL queries, functions, procedures and triggers.
• Monitor and tune database performance to ensure reliability and scalability.
• Implement and maintain backup, recovery and disaster recovery solutions.
• Support database deployments, upgrades and migration activities.
• Collaborate with software engineering teams to integrate database solutions with applications, APIs and microservices.
• Work alongside DevOps teams to support CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code practices.
• Conduct technical reviews and promote database development best practices.
• Provide mentoring, coaching and technical guidance to team members.
• Investigate emerging technologies and identify opportunities for platform improvement.

Key Skills required

• Strong commercial experience with AWS RDS Aurora PostgreSQL.
• Expertise in PostgreSQL database design, administration and performance tuning.
• Experience supporting enterprise-scale cloud environments.
• Knowledge of database security, availability, resilience and recovery strategies.
• Experience working within Agile delivery frameworks.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and deliver practical solutions.
• Experience contributing to automation, DevOps and modern engineering practices.

Highly Regarded

• AWS cloud certifications.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools.
• Database migration and modernisation experience.
