Qualifications

• 10+ years in database administration
• 5+ years specializing in complex enterprise PostgreSQL environments
• Expertise in PostgreSQL architecture, performance tuning, indexing, partitioning and security
• Experience with High Availability, DR, replication and disaster recovery
• Experience implementing database automation and CI/CD practices using Bash, Python, or PowerShell
• Experience with database infrastructure lifecycle management, physical design and data modelling
• Background in training/mentoring DBA teams on PostgreSQL best practices
• Exposure to containerization (Kubernetes), Terraform, or Oracle/SQL Server is desirable

Responsibilities

Senior Database Engineer

FinXL Professional Services is a leading IT consultancy that partners with clients to bridge the gap between business needs and technology capabilities. Since 2003, we've been delivering high-value ICT services across government, finance, telecommunications, and enterprise sectors.

FinXL is seeking a Senior Database Engineer to join our consulting team and be deployed with a leading banking client on a 12+ months fixed-term contract with offices in Sydney CBD and Norwest.

This position is a hybrid position combining enterprise database architecture, DevOps automation, and technical mentorship. The engineer will design, modernize, and tune high-availability PostgreSQL environments while automating core administration tasks like patching, provisioning, and backups through CI/CD and scripting. Crucially, a central focus of the contract is acting as a trainer to lead a capability uplift program for a team of DBAs, transitioning them to PostgreSQL self-sufficiency through structured workshops, mentoring, and comprehensive operational runbooks. Alongside operational excellence and top-tier incident management, the role also provides technical governance, capacity planning, and executive reporting to ensure sustainable long-term platform health.

Responsibilities

• Architect, modernise, and deploy robust PostgreSQL database environments inline with enterprise banking standards.
• Execute database migrations, platform upgrades, version consolidations, and continuous performance tuning.
• Design, test, and implement High Availability, Disaster Recovery, replication, and comprehensive backup strategies.
• Design and build end-to-end DBA automation frameworks for database provisioning, patching, monitoring, and operational tasks.
• Develop and lead a structured PostgreSQL capability uplift program through hands-on coaching and workshops.
• Provide expert escalation support for critical database incidents, root cause analysis, and technical governance reviews.

Key Skills & Experience

• 10+ years in database administration with 5+ years specializing in complex enterprise PostgreSQL environments.
• Expert-level mastery of PostgreSQL architecture, performance tuning, indexing, partitioning, and security.
• Deep expertise establishing database High Availability, DR, replication, and disaster recovery solutions.
• Proven experience implementing database automation and CI/CD practices using Bash, Python, or PowerShell.
• Practical experience with database infrastructure lifecycle management, physical design, and data modelling.
• Demonstrated background in training, mentoring, or upskilling DBA teams on PostgreSQL best practices.
• Exposure to containerization (Kubernetes), Terraform, or secondary database platforms (Oracle/SQL Server) is desirable.

Engagement Details
